| It's not like it hasn't happened before. In fact there are reports of similar things on the board often. But, today, there was a long article in the local food section of my daily paper giving all the bad things that could happen to you from eating that "low carb fad diet." The writer was with the Agricultural Extension Service. She is not a doctor, is not a nutritionist, and is definitely not informed. I wish I could link the article, but it was not on the web site. Among the items that she listed as risks are: Heart Disease -- citing the cause as elevating cholesterol Cancer-- again the need to increase fruits and vegetables Poor long-term weight control -- the old boredom will get you and and it's only decreased calories that are making the weight come off anyway. Reduced athletic performance -- Boy, I'm worried about that one High Blood Pressure -- According to her we need to get those high carb, high fiber items so that we can get get all our minerals Gout Kidney Stones Osteoporosis Fainting -- gotta love this, because of low blood pressure. Now what was it she said earlier about high blood pressure?? and last Keto Breath. She could stand to learn a few things about this "low carb fad diet." I should send her my latest blood test and blood pressure results, but somehow, I don't think it would make any difference. | If ignorance is truly bliss, then there must be some extremely blissful people out there when it comes to eating low-carb! You'd think after ALL THIS TIME that the Atkins plan would at least be READ by people who choose to expound upon it, or heap shame upon it. I take all that crap with a grain of salt and just ignore 'em. Funny how contradictory those righteous, "low carb is BAD" folks can be though, isn't it? Char Don't squat with yer spurs on! |

| Judy, if this is that East Texas Review piece by one, Jill Parker, then Andrea has posted it above in "Articles" and is writing this woman a response. I commented that the only thing about low carbing that made my blood pressure go up was reading trash like that article! Some men's magazine (Men's Health?) just came out with their annual survey on the fattest city in the US and for the 3rd year running, Houston was it. Not to say that East Texans are any fatter than the rest of the country - BUT given that this is the sort of BS that shows up in their local papers - I can't say I'm surprised... She's an ag extensionist? Hmmmmm, wonder if anyone from the Wheat industry is paying her for her, cough, cough "research" (or is a member of her immediate family!)? | Well, it wasn't in East Texas Review where I read it, but in the food section of our daily paper. ETR is just a small publication. The daily paper has a much larger readership. Like I said on Andrea's thread......It's really great to have such informed people giving us their theories on what is good for us.
