I was wondering if it would be alright to eat an apple for my snack on owl....I have been Atkins for about two months and I have loaned my dandr to a friend who soon must buy her own book! I have been happily eating all of the veggies on the permitted list...and have recently added a few berries to my menue! I am trying to avoid the delicious sounding deserts that I have read discussed in this forum until maintance... I know that apples have a lot of fiber and someone worte that they eat a lot of melon and apples along with all of the permitted veggies that they want... I have been trying to be observant of calories and have decided that the pork rinds are just not nutritious enough to indulge in too often and the cheese I love is high calorie as well... So doea anyone eat apples? Trying to tune my eating here! Twigg

You might find the Moving Beyond Berries article from the Atkins website helpful. It appears apples are ok.... *********** ...wishes come true, not free! -from Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods

To steal a thought from The Zone and the Carb Addicts plans, it might be helpful to eat some protein along with your apple. The theory is that the protein will slow down or help balance out the glycemic load from the sugars in the apple, thus holding off the insulin rush you might otherwise get, keeping your blood glucose levels more stable. Probably something you'll need to experiment with and see how you do. Sky 186/144/under 150

Dart - Thanks so much for that link. Looks as if the next edition of DANDR will allow more variety of fruit. Clare

| Sky, That's the same theory that Schwarzbein has, always have protein with your carbs. In fact, she recommends that when you sit down to a meal (her meals being protein/fat/veggies/carb, always), the first thing in your mouth should be protein so that your stomach doesn't get a head start on the carbs. | I put a little diced apple in my tuna salads. It gives it some slightly sweet, crunchy texture, which I used to get from sweet relish, a no-no. I'd be careful about adding apples back in. Do it slowly and watch your ketones. There are other fruits you can eat that are lower in carbs, foods that you might not be used to thinking of as fruit, but they are, with the same nutritional benefits. Tomatoes, olives, avocados, summer squash, and eggplant are all fruits and rich sources of vitamins and nutrients. I snack on kalamata olives all day and love them. |

I usually only eat half an apple at a time. I also like to quarter it, then sprinkle on cinnamon and Splenda. Makes a nice snack! I usually also start with a cheese stick though, to keep the sugars in the apple from having a big impact on my insulin levels. Char Don't squat with yer spurs on!
