Default Protein Shakes

Hi,

So, my question of the day is this:

I have been making a protein shake every morning for breakfast. I put in about 8-10 ozs of the Almond Breeze unsweetened vanilla and one scoop of Designer Chocolate Whey protein powder along with ice. These are sooo good, that I am wondering if having another one in the afternoon on some days would be a terrible thing?

I have reached the point where I am desperately looking around for alternatives to the regular stuff I am eating. I am in boredom mode! Any and all suggestions would be great! The easier the better....

BTW - that is all I have for breakfast and then I have a regular lunch - ie: protein and veggies or salad with protein included. Today I will have kale and a turkey burger patty with swiss. The shake would be around 4pm and then dinner after I go home and either run or hike. Dinner will likely be more veggies and protein - either Turkey meatballs or a hard boiled egg - something like that.

We are going to Maui at the end of October and I am on a mission to lose the 15 lbs I gained from quitting smoking. It has been just over a year since I quit - I figure it's time! I hate that the pants I worked so hard to get into are now snug!

TerriLynn,
I have just about the same protein shake as you, except I use 1.5 C unsweet vanilla or chocolate almond milk and 1 scoop genisoy spi powder. These shakes come out to about 150-160 calories and 1-2 carbs. I guess what you need to ask yourself is, can you afford the extra calories. I don't see a problem substituting a protein shake in place of another snack of equal carb/calorie value. It may be a YMMV thing. Give it a try, monitor the results, and take it from there.
Let us know what you decide and how it's going.

Ditto. I have a protein shake for breakfast many mornings. Usually it's an EAS Carb Control premade shake or a Designer Whey shake with Almond Breeze. My only additions are a scoop of multivitamin mineral powder and a couple of scoops of fiber. Then I'm good to go. (No pun intended ) IMO "real food" is the goal, but having a protein shake is much better than going off plan.

Nothing wrong with a good protein shake for a snack. I love to use Talking Rain kiwi flavor (I get it at Sam's, it's Splenda sweetened) and I use Champion brand whey protein powder, some ice, and wow! The only carbs are what are in the protein powder. The almond milk is great, too. And, I like a protein shake for an evening snack, the protein helps me sleep better.

so, if a day comes that I do have two in one day I am not doing something obviously wrong, am I? Of course I would do a light dinner if I had one for breakfast and another as an afternoon snack. The Almond Breeze is pretty low in both carbs and cals. I guess most of the calories are in the Whey protein powder. I can't remember the carb count for that, but I know it's the lowest one I could find.

What kind of fiber are you adding?

Well, I'm an oddball about fiber types it seems, but generally I add some variety of the following

Heather's Tummy Powder
(acacia fiber)--sometimes this is all I use--blends very well
Aloha Nu Coconut Fiber or Flour (depends on what I have)-adds a little flavor
Oat Fiber--Occasionally, ECC count not quite as good as the above two, but certainly acceptable.

I like the above because they don't cause gas or bloating, and aren't gooey like psyllium or tasteless like wheat bran.

Many people like to add flax meal as their fiber/omega3, but for the amount of fiber I like, flax meal adds more calories than I need on maintenance.

Protein shakes are great. However, 100% whey protein is so rapidly absorbed that it can spike insulin. There are other protein shakes that contain a blend of whey, casein and egg proteins that are more slowly absorbed, and deliver a more sustained release of protein over a longer period of time. This might not be a concern for you if you are drinking them in the morning when insulin sensitivity is greater, but for a late night protein shake, (right before bed) the blend might be more well suited for those of us who don't want any spikes in insulin.
