I have started taking fish capsules to improve my blood lipids. Does anyone else take them and if so which ones do you recommend?

I tried to take them 2 years ago. My eye doctor recommended 1 to 2 tbs per day of salmon oil or flaxseed oil to improve dry eye syndrome. I tried, but I couldn't hack it. The fish capsules would have me burping fish skin taste all day - MAJOR BLECH!!! I used flaxseed oil in salad dressings or mixed with carrot juice for a while, but it reminds me too much of furniture polish (linseed oil is the same thing, but not food grade).

Since then, I've done a fair amount of reading about essential fatty acids and I am convinced that increasing them in the diet is extremely beneficial.

However, there are a some studies that suggest taking the essential fatty acid oils in capsule form is problematic. Apparently, the gel capsules interfer with the body's uptake of the omega 3 and omega 6 components.

Now, I just try to eat more salmon and tuna and I use flaxseed meal in some of my cooking. Flaxsead meal mixed with egg and almond flour makes a pretty tasty pancake.

All I can say is YUCK!!! I do not like fish anyway.

I eat flaxmeal cereal just about every morning. Do you think I am covered?

There is such thing as "deoderized" fish oil capsules...however, I have not tried those. I have taken the regular capsules and I did get fish burps at first, they seem to have diminished now.
If nothing else, I take my flax seed capsules everyday and I've bought some ground flax seeds but I have not gotten around to figuring out what I'm going to add them too.

UltraViolet, before I started LC, I added my flax to any shakes I make, salads, yogurt etc. Remember though, if it is already ground, keep it in air tight, preferably dark container, in dark cool place. I bought mine as seeds and grind them as I need them, they last about 1 year or so that way. Bye!

Hi, I take Cod Liver Oil And Flaxseed Oil. I also had a problem with a burp now and then and it was "yuck". I have been on them over a year and very rarely do I have a problem anymore.

Thanks Steph !
Those are all good ideas. I haven't opened the bag yet and I'm glad you told me about how to store it once I have.
Does any one know what happens "when flax goes bad" ? (other than it starts smoking cigarettes, using bad language and drinking Southern Comfort from the bottle ?)

If you take the fish capsules (aka Omega 3 Fatty Acids) before you go to bed at night, I promise you'll never have a fishy burp again!

BTW, I take Shaklee EPa.

I take Dr A's EFAs (when i remember)

that *fish burp* doesnt last very long, and i do find the unpleasantness is worth the over all benefits of the oils.

I have been taking flax capsule for the past 7 mo and just added fish oil to the mix this month. Purchased Costco brand and have had no problems with "fish burp." I do, however, try to eat after taking my a.m. supplements (7 diff pills)

I've been taking an essential oil supplement I found at our local GNC. A gel pill combo of flax oil, borage oil and a micro-alge oil. I haven't noticed any problems with fishy burps. I also pretty much always take them with food.

LOL over the flax seed gone bad!

You can smell it - if it's fresh it smells like, well, SEEDS. If it's bad, it smells like rancid oil.

I grind up 3 cups at a time and keep it in the freezer in an airtight container.

My DH takes the fish oil capsules; he mentioned about the burp for a week or two and then says he hasn't noticed it since.

I like the flax better. I take a tablespoon of flax oil, right off the spoon, about 3-4 times a week, and incorporate flax meal into so many things I cook - "breading", pancakes, hot cereal, meatloaf, shakes, I even like a tablespoon of it sprinkled over berries and then pour some nice thick cream over it all and devour!

JIm March,

Here is something that may help you. I have talked to several people, RNs included who say this has helped them tremendously in that area. LipiTrim, Blood Lipid Maintenance you can find it here: www.livehealthynow.unfranchise.com.
Also, for those of you who want to take omega 3 supplements, you may want to try Tri-Omega PLUS. You can get it at the same site. It has omega 3 fatty acids, (flax seed oil and fish oil), along with three "B" vitamins. Just go to the site and type in lipids and both of these supplements should come up.

Jim, I've taken omega3 fish oil caps for over five years. They are an integral part of my health care plan. Because the oceans are so heavily contaminated, however, I take molecularly distilled fish oil caps, such as ZonePerfect Omega3.
