Barb, I thought about you in the middle of the night, when I woke up with a leg cramp. I thought to myself "oh boy, maybe I'll have a whoosh in the morning!" I weighed 234 yesterday and 232 this morning.

(Barb is convinced leg cramps are a sign of a whoosh)

I had a really terrible leg cramp the other night. As I was trying to keep from screaming in pain and work out the cramp I was thinking about having a whoosh the next morning. I forgot to check though :-(. I guess what seems like a good idea in the middle of the night can be forgotten very quickly in the light of day.

If I have to have the leg cramps to get the whooshes, I will stay on the slow and steady.

Frieda,

A whoosh (woosh) is a time when your weight suddenly drops a pound or two. Usually it shows up overnight. In my example, I was 234 one day, 232 the next day. Today, I haven't checked.

Now, some of that can be due to daily weight fluctuations. I was on a 5-6 pound roller coaster from mid-May, I would go up and down the same weight for weeks. Finally, the scale seems to be going down again, so I am celebrating the "Whoosh"!

I had leg cramps last night... I am up a pound though. Both the leg cramp and the ‘up a pound’ could be due to the fact I started jogging again this week. I think the exercising is causing sore muscles and I am telling my self the extra pound is from increased muscle mass. Lets hope it is true. I will take more leg cramps if my weight will swing the other direction. In the mean time I am going to try to stretch more.

Barb, you may have something there with your theory. I had leg and feet cramps a lot this month and I'm down 15 pounds for the month (even though I gained 1.5 this week). I had never made the connection before...

Here's to more leg and feet cramps (the feet cramps are the killers for me)!

I must have missed this theory on the old board. I have had feet cramps some during the day, and have lost 2-3 pounds over the last two weeks. I contributed the cramps to standing on my feet teaching, but who knows, maybe it was a sign of the diminishing me??????

I don't seem to hold true to the theory - the two times I've had leg cramps, no WHOOSH! I was ripped off! :-)

BTW in case anyone isn't aware - if you point your toes perpendicular to your leg, and pull them back (to elongate the muscle in your calf) it really helps to stop the cramp...my boss (doctor) says some of what causes leg cramps at night is that the weight of the blankets and the fact that they are all tucked in tight at the foot of the bed cause your foot to point straight down (in the same direction as the bone of your leg) and that shortens the muscle in your calf, making it cramp when it's been held that way for an extended period. So pulling your toes UP and making that muscle LONG again unkinks the cramp! It does help. As does using salt substitute for the potassium.....

I've faught feet and leg cramps for many years, both before, during and after LC. Two things that seem to help prevent them are staying hydrated and a magnesium supplement (taken along with calcium and potassium).

Definitely speak to your doctor about supplements before you just start tossing them in... remember OTC-Over The Counter does not guarantee safety and prescriptions you take will interact with OTCs.

If the cramps appear to be exercise induced (I'm a SCUBA diver so finning sometimes brings on cramps), be sure to gently stretch and warm up the muscles before AND properly cool down after exercise. Ankle circles are wonderful... 15-20 reps on each leg.

As a planar fasciitis sufferer, I'm very sensitive to and cognizant of leg/feet cramps. I stretch them liberally every morning, and an especially thorough one in prep for martial arts. Doc prescribed 500mg of Naproxen daily, and I've not had pain in months.

So, I can't correlate cramps to whoosh, but for me, whooshes tend to more closely and linearly follow digestive habits. (See my topic on Maltitol!)

I recommend that everyone do a good stretch as often as possible. it's great for you, and good exercise by itself if done right!

Cheers!

Ginger,

The magnesium supplements (when taken as magnesium oxide) help another dreaded LC issue: gout. At the first sign, I pop 200mg, then 200mg the next day and it usually kills it for me. (I haven't had gout this time on Atkins, but I did 4 years ago last time I did it)

Cheers!
