I bought my second loaf of Nature's Own lower carb bread. My first loaf I ate only occasionally, not even a slice every week. I had to throw half the loaf away. I froze it, but I did not like the taste (our electric had been off and it may have refrozen). Anyway witht his new loaf, I decided to eat a slice daily so I would not waste the bread. I also bought Fifty50 no sugar added spread. For the past 2 mornings I had a slice of toast with 2 tsp. of spread. Today I am up a pound and my sticks barely showed ketosis. I guess I am not going to be able to have my bread and jam .

BTW, the spread has 4 carbs, 1 sugar and 3 sorbitol (sweentened with NutraSweet) per 1 tbs. I counted the whole carb. The toast & spread together was 7 carbs.

I just wanted to share my disappointment!

I sure can't eat the LC bread everday (just a couple times a week) and have had the SF smuckers twice since starting this WOE back in July. The bread is nice for a change but its certainly not for everyday, even on OWL, for me.

I wouldn't be surprised if the culprit was the jam and not the bread. I suspect that sorbitol is nearly as bad as sugar for some of us on LC diets.

I'd say back off on both for a while. Then, try adding back just the bread. I always eat the LC bread with a protein. So, try having a piece of buttered toast with your eggs; or spread the bread with some no-sugar-added peanut butter or tuna salad; or make a nice sandwich with ham or turkey.

Once a week or so I treat myself to "cheesetoast" for breakfast - I just put a slice of Tillamook extra-sharp cheddar on the low carb bread and put it in the toaster oven at 425* til the cheese BARELY starts to bubble around the edges. By then the bread is toasty and it's a delicious filling breakfast!

I agree, the jam may be throwing you off more than the bread, and eating it WITH some protein is probably the key.

I ate the bread with my sausage and eggs. It probably is the jam/spread.

Oh well! I am going back to my flaxmeal cereal for breakfast. I have a hard time eating eggs without bread.

Have you tried the Steele's Strawberry Preserves? Pretty darn good...(even on ice cream).

You know, instead of using fake jam, you could take a half a peach and dice/smush it. That would give you about 3.5 net carbs.

Trading Steeles for Fifty50 means you're trading one sugar alcohol for another (manitol and sorbitol are both sugar alcohols.)

Just a FYI.

Not to further muddy the waters or encourage jam-eating - BUT! I make my own jam, using Trader Joe's frozen mixed berries - marionberries, blueberries, and raspberries. I use 1.5 cups Splenda to 1 lb. berries. Mix together and let the berries thaw completely. Stir well, then in microwave safe container with room for the jam to come to a rolling boil, just cook it on High, stirring occasionally (more often in the beginning, every minute or so, then every 3-5 minutes after that) until it is thickened sufficiently. I usually do 3 pounds of berries and 4.5 cups Splenda at a time and it takes about 25 minutes total. I'm sure you could do it on the stovetop, it just takes constant stirring there!

I've also done it in the pressure cooker; it only takes 6 minutes of pressurized cooking, then another 6-7 minutes without pressure.

Either way it's dang good stuff and the Splenda never bothers me!

I started doing this while on Weight Watchers. It really seemed like a big treat to have a piece of Ezekiel bread, toasted, with the jam. Now I use the low-carb bread, some BUTTER, and the jam! BETTER treat!

Susan, I'm so glad you tested yourself with the sticks! It sounds like they rescued your diet.

I'm not sure if it's the total carbs or the sorbitol. However, I've become very distrustful of any new product labeled low-carb because of similar experiences. I know this diet works just great when I keep things simple.
