Costco muffins -- yuck!

Sad to say I broke down the other day and bought one of those packs of giant Costco muffins... just for snacks for the kids since it's a busy week, but after I ate one the next day I was repentant and found this online to stop future purchases!

At 600-700 calories per muffin and with the "extra" ingredients to hold them together and give shelf life, they quickly lose their appeal!!

In regards to the school vending machine thread, here are my goals to get the time, guts and energy to stand up and be heard this year and try to get some changes made...

Our high school home-ec classes offer a breakfast counter with stuff like the Costco muffins for sale... nary a healthy thing offered.

Pop machines... IMHO should have water adverts on them instead of the Pepsi/Coke and the water and pop should be the same price instead of pop being cheaper.

Concession stands for games often don't have any decent food choices at all -- candy, nachos, pretzels (big soft kind), cardboard pizza (thick crust, few toppings), hot dogs, pop, and more candy. ...early tournament games add in the option of donuts.

It's not only what people are demanding, it's also the choices offered to them. They could at least add in jerky and some fruit. Any other ideas here that could work for concessions or the breakfast counter?

Linda

I agree with you completely about the pricing difference between soda and water. It never ceases to annoy me when I find vending machines charging so much more for water. Also, when I go to the movies the price for a bottle of water is more than the price of a medium coke!

As to suggestions for the consession stand, what about packaged nuts, olives (sold in small containers), prepared salads (with packets of dressing), berries (in plastic containers like at the grocery store) or beef jerky? Maybe not the best selection possible, but better than candy and carbs.

I know the bars aren't the best thing but certainly would be better than the costco muffins. The morning start bars are pretty good too!

While I don't consider all of these to be great choices, I think they are better than the selections generally offered, which are full of transfats (chips, cookies, candy, cakes).

Vending machines:

cans (pull-tab tops) of tuna with crackers
cans of soup and stew
cans of fruit
cans of 3-bean salad
nuts and dried fruit trail mix
pickles
protein shakes (beverage machines)

Concession stands:

protein shakes
hard boiled eggs
coleslaw
stuffed celery (cheese or pb)
cut-up veggies and dip
marinated vegetable salad
assorted sausages
chicken wings (although some are v. high carb)
whole grain dinner rolls
milk
cheese sticks
sliced meat roll-ups
cottage cheese
yogurt
