Last week I asked for some advice about helping my DH lose weight on modified Atkins. He needed to lose inches quickly so he could wear his kilt to a 50th birthday party this week (at which carbs would also be invited, but that's another story!). I got some great advice from people here which was very useful.

He hasn't weighed himself rigorously, so I don't know quite what he lost, but it must be something in the region of 7 pounds. He lost 2" from his waist. In fact now his business suits are hanging off him and he is regretting having got rid of all his size 36" pants.

I never put him on Induction, and as he travels a lot and eats hotel food when away, it's probably not possible. He just avoided the white stuff, although I was unhappy that he didn't drink enough water. He is drinking more than he did, anyway.

He had been saying after the party he would go back to desserts (he is Scottish and has a sweet tooth made worse by the wonderful baked goods they go in for up there). However, he must be feeling great, because he rang home last night and I asked him what he had been eating. Steaks, veggies, no potato, no bread, and he had eggs and bacon, no toast, for breakfast. He passed the test!!! We went on a country ramble (lots of uphill, exhausting) on Sunday last and ate nuts and cheese for snacks, and I expected him to moan (no cookies!!!), but he was fine.

Sorry if I sound so obsessive about this, but if he does take on low carbing as a sensible way of eating/living, it makes it easier for me as well!!!!

Thanks to all who gave advice!

That gives me hope for my husband! If I could just get him to quit drinking soda, I think he could really do this! Keep me posted on your DH!

LOL, My DH is of Scottish decent and boy oh boy does he have a sweet tooth!!!! Luckily he is thin, so far, but he is sedentary and doesn't drink any water of any kind. Tea, tea, tea and pop is all he drinks. I figure tho, he is getting SOME benefit with all the veggies I make him eat.

Good luck with DH!!!!

Lilysmom -

When my DH and I did Atkins the first time in 2001, he quit drinking about 4 - 6 cans of soda a day and the pounds just about fell off of him. He lost 45 pounds so fast it was amazing!

Mada, how did you get him to stop drinking so much soda? I feel like I'm the parent saying "No Soda"! I am really afraid he is going to have a heart attack or liver failure or something (he's only 27!!) I guess what I need help on is how does everyone "encourage" their Spouse to eat better. I don't even want him to follow Atkins as strict as I do. Any advice from anyone?

I read the book and kept quoting info to him about how obesity has risen since refined carbs have come into our lives. Then I gave him a simple explanation about the diet and how it was meat, veges and CREAM! (right up his alley since I'd been (stupidly)fat-freeing him for years). That was all it took. He read the book and jumped in with both feet.

We both slipped since having our son a year ago, and I'm back to this WOE. He's starting again next week. (says he wants to use up all the food that he shouldn't have, or it's wasteful... had a big discussion about that this morning. He attributes it to how he was raised.)

Anyway, I guess I just had to get him to digest the info from the book. Dr. A explains it very well, and when you see it in black and white, it's shocking.

All in all, I think you have to have a change in mindset and WANT to fix the problem. Not half-a** it.

I don't know if this helps, but that's what happened with us.

Lilysmom, you could have him switch from regular to sugar-free soda. There are a lot of good diet sodas out there. I suppose some people might take a while getting used to the artificial sweetener taste, but you do eventually, if that's all you can have. I prefer diet sodas to real soda.

A good diet soda to convert your DH to is "Hansen" or "DietRite". Those are sweetened with sucralose and to me taste better than the sugar-sweetened stuff. No icky aftertaste either.

The first time I tried going lower carb (a la "Curves") my husband didn't participate. I failed miserably. He kept bringing home tempting stuff. Now we are both doing Atkins. I basically kept telling him about what I was reading and how much better it is for us. Then when I decided to start it, he decided to join. He even admitted, that he made it hard for me the time before. I kind of reeled him in bit by bit. It has been great! So much easier to do it together.

Never give up! Never surrender!
