Great news!! I went off my diabetic med (1600 mgs metformin per day) mid June (without my doctor's permission) and had blood work done 2 weeks later. That report was great and my doc reluctantly let me stay on LC and not take the drugs, pending a good report in 3 months. Well, the three months have passed. I am 14 lbs lighter, blood pressure 120/70, HBAo1c reading a MARVELOUS 5.1, fasting blood glucose of 94, thyroid 1.13!!! I am so happy!!!
I think I can do this for the rest of my life!!! Thanks to everyone on this site who post questions and responses. I read a lot of them everyday and get so much great information and encouragement. I can't begin to tell you how much I depend on all of you. This is the first time in my adult life that I have felt worthwhile and confident about my weight loss efforts. I never realized that I was a carbohydrate addict and I couldn't understand how I could lose over 100 lbs four different times and then gain it all back plus extra. It just never made any sense before I found this site. I couldn't understand how I could lose over 90 lbs and still not get my blood glucose under control. I didn't understand why I had no energy and was depressed all the time. Now I DO UNDERSTAND and things are looking up!!! I know I will eventually get to my goal weight and that because of the LC WOE I now have my hypothyroidism and diabetes under control. I just want to encourage others to try this also and find out how healthy a lifestyle it really is. Thanks again.

Dianna!
Your story brought tears to my eyes because you overcame a seemingly hopeless situation by not giving up and pursuing every available option until you found our WOE. Welcome!

This is exactly what I like to see! Proof that diabetes can be reversed.

I never understood that phrase "reverse diabetes" because I thought once you get it, you will always have it. That you will always fail blood sugar tests.

But I read in Protein Power that by taking away a good portion of your daily carbs (like before this WOE) your receptors can "heal".

That was amazing to me! You and I needed (and need) time to let ourselves heal from the abuses of our prior life!

Your body CAN bounce back! And you proved it!

Thank you for the inspiration!

I like how you worked in the caveat that your doctor 'reluctantly' let you stay off your meds. Ever get the feeling that health care professionals have a vested interest in keeping the medicines flowing? I was in the doctor's office yesterday and no less than three separate pharmaceutical reps came into the lobby with pens, paper, samples, even lunch for the staff! I guess it's not a shock that I've had to fill 8 different prescriptions for my wife and daughter this week. But I digress.

Congratulations on your remarkable progress, it really does provide inspiration to everyone who picks their route through this way of eating daily. Since you know what you felt like before, you have a great motivator to stay true to low carb!

CONGRATULATIONS!
I too am a diabetic fighting with my MD to get off the meds. I have an appointment in 2 weeks and assuming all my numbers stay good its goodbye to the drugs forever.

My Doc, in my last visit, refused to give credit to my weight loss with low bg and cholesterol levels to Atkins. He claimed since I wasn't eating " 8 eggs, a lb of bacon and a steak everyday" that I wasn't on "real Atkins'.

Good for you, Dianna!

While I didn't have quite the same percentage of myself to lose as you did, I understand the futile struggle to get blood sugar under control with "regular" diets. I also understand the depression and lack of energy. That was me, before this way of eating. My brain was "off line" more than it was "on" ... and my job depends on my brain.

I'm so happy for your having found a way of life that results in feeling so much better!

Congrats!
