I started atkins in Feb. and have lost from 232 down to 162. I am just now trying to get into owl, and weightwise, I'm happy. I either stay the same each week or lose about 1/2 lb. Right after I started atkins, my cholestrol came down from 235 to 190.. and all my other vitals read normal. This week my cholesterol read 227, and the other stuff still normal. My biggest meal is breakfast. I have been eating 2 pieces of bacon, and 2 sausages, and one egg... no lunch... and for dinner I have some type meat and a salad, with oil and vinegar. Just recently I have added either one piece of cantaloupe, or a serving of green beans with dinner. I also started having a meal I have not been allowed, when eating out. Maybe alfredo linquine, or whatever with the bread just once. I have only did this twice in the last month, and then I took carb blockers. It didnt' affect my weight. I have been taking chorinum gtf also, and the energy it gives me is great!. I do not snack... normally.. but since trying to go on owl I did have popcorn with spray butter twice in a month also. Am I doing something wrong? My doctor says my weight is more important then my cholesterol, and she wants me to take two zocar instead of the normal one that I usually take. I want to control my cholesterol without increasing my zocar. And I want to stay on Atkins too.

Lou,

You might want to cut down on the bacon and eggs and sausage and trade that in for Flaxomeal cereal. I make my own with: 2 TBS. Flaxmeal, 2 TBS. ground almonds, 2 TBS. ground pecans, 2 TBS. milk and egg protein powder (health food store) Stevia and splenda (to taste) and a shot of a sugar-free syrup (1TBS.). I add hot water to it and mix it up good. I then let it cool off a bit and add a tsp. or so of flax OIL. It's quite tastey and has a TON of fiber. Fiber is one of the best ways to get cholesterol levels down. You should try this and give it 3 months to see if there's a difference. You don't have to give up your bacon and eggs completely, but get you fiber up!!!

Fiber = good idea, Barb... I have 2 Tbs of psyllium husks a day, myself. (TC: 157!)

Also, Lou, can you give us more details? LDL, HDL, Trig., etc. etc. sometimes its not all as bad as the total number would indicate. Maybe we can offer you a line of questioning for your Dr. that may be enlightening.

Mikeyrat is right in that the ratio of HDL to LDL, Total Cholestrol, and Triglicerides are more important than the total count.

For example, my total cholestrol is high (282), but I have great numbers for HDL (64) and Triglicerides (95). These offset the high value I got for LDL (199). So, when they figured the ratios, the numbers were well within healthy guidelines.

Your doc should be able to give you those ratios and the significance.

Lou, your ratio is good. Take your total cholesterol and divide by your HDL and you get a ratio of 3.6.

Anything under 5 is great.

These are the ranges the HMO advice nurse gave me:

Total: under 240
HDL: over 45
LDL: under 130
Triglicerides: under 400

By those ranges, it looks like you are doing great to me!

Listen to the suggestions here. These are all good suggestions.

There are also some natural herbal supplements that can help keep your cholesterol under control. I personally know people who take the LipiTrim cholesterol control from this site: www.livehealthynow.unfranchise.com and have great results without the hassle of side effects from the prescription stuff.

Check it out. It may help.
