Okay, I guess this is a review.

I finally tried the Atkins Shakes. I've resisted the temptation for months because I'm still angry about what their maltitol-laced bars did to my diet. But somebody actually gave me a gift: a four-pack of Atkins Chocolate Delight.

How can you people drink these??? They are awful!! They taste like grit. They smell funny, either from the soy flour or the vitamins, I'm not sure which. And the after-taste was so bad I had to guzzle a diet soda to get the taste out of my mouth. And even then it didn't completely go away. I still smelled it in my sinuses this morning. Bleeccccchhhhhhhh...

I use the optimum nutrition egg protein powder chocolate flavor. I use 2 scoops with 16 oz of very cold water and shake it for about 30 seconds. No gritty taste or after taste. This is my usual breakfast 3-4 days a week.

Much better than the Atkins Shakes.

Hi Doc - I disagree - I thought it was yummy! I was pleasantly surprised last weekend when I tried my first shake. I actually thought it was delicious. I have only tried the EAS and Carbsense shakes in comparison so I've not a lot of experience with these shakes. Just wanted to offer an alternative perspective.

everybody has different taste preferences....

i dont particularly care for any pre-made shakes, i prefer powders - i find the premades too sweet, and yes, that odd vitamin taste.

I know what you mean about the vitamin taste in the Atkins shakes - but, I've always liked that taste. Odd, I know.

Despite the funny taste, I could guzzle the things - probably the sweetness calling me. I don't buy them anymore. I do have sume Protein Power shakes for days when I'm really in a rush. The Protein Power shakes aren't as sweet. Still I try not to have more than one a week.

I don't use pre-made shakes either. Here is a link to a recipe I use to make the protein shakes. I have one almost every day.

I'm with you, Dr. I. ... they blow bigtime.

It's been a couple of years since I had a shake, but I used to rely on them for a meal or snack when I was in a situation where there was no other good option - but never the pre-made ones. I couldn't stand them.

However, I didn't mind the Atkins chocolate powder (when juiced up with some heavy cream, extra cocoa, and a packet of splenda.) After my first overnight seminar where there was practically NO food that I would choose to eat, I took to packing heavy cream, shake mix, fixins and a stick blender anytime I had to be away overnight.

I still bring my own heavy cream. I put it in a small soda bottle in a little soft sided cooler and if I can't cram it into the little fridge in my motel room - or if there isn't one - I just keep it in my cooler and add ice from the ice machine as needed.

I cannot stand the taste of any of the protein powders, and I thought the shakes were disgusting. Isn't it great that we all have different taste .

The ones I tried tasted to me like Nestles quick made with water YUKKKKK! I'd rather drink warm flat diet soda. Amazing how much peoples tastes vary.

I prefer the powders mixed with a little cream, water, ice, plain yogurt, ground flax and sometimes a splash of SF syrup. (I'm currently on a kick with vanilla shake mix and caramel syrup - yum !)
The premixed shakes are okay...I like the Atkins the least out of the premixed, but I don't find them horrible either. I think the ones I make myself have more substance....I feel fuller and sustained for a longer period of time.

Wow, so many people, so many opinions!

Personally I really LIKE the Atkins shakes but ONLY the Cafe au Lait and the Chocolate Royale. I can TOLERATE the Chocolate Delight, but NOT the vanilla or strawberry - go figger!

I've tried CarbSense and EAS and another one, can't remember what it was, and found them all watery - to me, the Atkins shakes are nice and creamy, and if I have one for breakfast, which I do maybe twice a week, it holds me until at least noon or 12:30.

It's so nice we all are so different, isn't it? What a boring world it would be otherwise!

Dr. I, (or anyone else)

If you would like some recipes to make your own protein shakes that taste MUCH MUCH better than that canned stuff, just drop me an email.

yes they do have a wierd after taste, but then so do their bars. the only one I found that wasnt too icky was the coconut one.

I tried a bar, Keto. what a difference in taste, it was great!
I have been getting the EAS shakes. mostly due to being less costly, and I use them when I cannot have a meal. I have been on induction for 3 months, lost 20 lbs so far.
that is exceptionally good for me, I have thyroid disease, so it is really hard to get the wieght off.

I actually really like the Atkins premade Vanilla Shake. I've had other shakes too, but I haven't been using any of them for a few weeks. Too expensive.

Also my problem is that I don't feel like "I have eaten" and so I'm more likely to eat soon again even if I'm not hungry. I know it's all in my head, but since I know that about me, I just stay away from them. I rather have a bar if I don't have any other option. I handle the maltitol usually rather well.

Yesterday I tried the new Slimfast low-carb bar. The taste was o.k., but afterwards I had the heebie-jeevies. Never again!

Never give up! Never surrender!
