| Are you talking about the Endulge bars? I would stay away from them period. They won't do your addiction any favors, they contain maltitol, which can impact your insulin levels exactly the same as sugar does. If they don't bother you as far as having to run to the bathroom every 2 seconds, it impacts your blood sugar levels. If they DO bother you that way, you might as well be eating EX-lax. | They affect each person differently. Some people have the same exact reactions to them that they have to a Hershey bar; some people have no reaction to them, but use them for an occasional treat.. You have to try one for yourself (don't try anything else new when you do), and keep track of how you feel after consuming one. If you can find them in your area, the At Last! bars by Carbolite are MUCH better than any of the Atkins products out there. They're made with a new sugar alcohol, which doesn't seem to cause spikes in blood sugar, doesn't cause cramps, bloating, etc. They're kinda hefty at $2 each, though, but the payoff in return is better. | I have noticed that some say that maltitol affects you the same way regular sugar does, but after looking into it, because I eat the carbolite bars, which contain maltitol, I found that all the info I found states that maltitol does not affect your insulin levels. Can anyone advise. I don't want to eat these if I shouldn't. Thanks.........this is my very first post....hope I did it correctly |

| I found this on diabetes.about.com. It's in their compehensive table of glycemic indexes. Perhaps I'm misinterpeting it but it looks very damning for maltitol. Pasting.... 592 Maltitol-based sweeteners or bulking agents 25 g Malbit CR (87% maltitol) (Cerestar, Vilvoorde, Belgium) 30 30±12 10 3 25 g Maltidex 100 (> 72% maltitol) (Cerestar, Vilvoorde, Belgium) 30 44±11 10 4 25 g Malbit CH (99% maltitol) (Cerestar, Vilvoorde, Belgium) 30 73±29 10 7 25 g Maltidex 200 (50% maltitol) (Cerestar, Vilvoorde, Belgium) 30 89±28 ... end of paste The purest maltitol sweetener, Malbit CH, has an index of about 73. Table sugar is about 68. | Yaz & Carole, Barb, Shrinky and Dr. I are right to warn you about LC chocolate. In my own blood sugar testing, maltitol (along with most other sugar alcohols) is a killer. This is a true, YMMV, issue. It seems that some people metabolize sugar alcohols very well, indeed. Those of us who DON'T get the trots from them seem to metabolize them best! There's more information on this issue here: Glycerine, Sugar Alcohols, Etc. For me, erythritol is an exception. It does not jack up my blood sugar like the other sugar alcohols. Remember that regardless of your physical reaction to LC chocolate, if it's good enough, for some people it can start up some serious psychological cravings. | Carole, WELCOME!!! So in a nutshell, if you get the trots, it may NOT affect your blood sugar. If you don't, It IS upping your insulin, so avoid it like the PLAGUE!!!! Barb Atkins-3/14/03 174/149.4/135 "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing." |

| Thanks everyone, I guess I will avoid maltitol. I am glad I found out sooner than later. I am not losing much weight, and maybe this is why. I am very disappointed that the Atkin books states that maltitol is acceptable and does NOT affect blood sugar. (page 128) I really count on that book to be correct. It is the "New" latest updated. Uhm.......carole |

| Guess what, Carole. In the 1998 edition (the one I got when I started this way of eating) sugar alcohols were NOT acceptable sweeteners. That was before he got into the retail low carb business. Go figure. Maggie 5'1" ~~ Atkins since '98 (160)/Maintaining nicely (110) ~~ Redhead until further notice! |

| Best to stick with real food and make your own sweet treats. This way you have ALL the control. Make whipped cream sweetened with Splenda and add a s/f pudding mix. It makes a fabulous mousy type dessert............but beware. You HAVE to control yourself. Eating the whole thing will be self-defeating. I make mine with 2 cups of heavy whipping cream. Whip it til it's nice and stiff (use a chilled bowl and beaters.) Mix 1 pkg of s/f pudding (any flavor) with 1 cup of half n half or half water and cream. Fold the pudding into the whipped cream, gently. Chill and enjoy 1/2 cup servings. mmm, mmmm, gooooooood!!!! Barb Atkins-3/14/03 174/149.4/135 "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing." |
