My husband went to a podiatrist today (broken toe), and asked him about his big toe, which had been hurting for a week or so. The Dr. told him is was gout (without any testing), and said it was from eating too much meat. Has anyone else had this problem? I'm not convinced it is gout -- my husband trains intensively as a martial artist, sometimes on bare floor (a competition about 1 1/2 weeks ago), and I think it may just be an injured joint. Still, it is possible it is gout -- if so, what do we do? Marshmchick

Go to another doctor for a second opinion - one that will actually run some tests before jumping to conclusions. (296/223/135) 04/01/03 The Downward Spiral Begins

There is a higher incidence of gout in Low Carbers...I read the article, but can't recall where...sorry. I can testify from my own experience however, the joints in my feet acted "gouty", but improved when I decreased the pork intake. However, I would think an X-ray would be appropriate to check for trauma/break since your hubby does martial arts. I would lean towards a second opinion also and maybe get started on some NSAIDS(non-steroid anti-inflamatory drugs) like mortin, advil. etc. HTH Shelley sg *********** "if it ain't broke don't fix it" ***********
