I cheated most of the day yesterday and a bit today as well. I don't know if I should head back to induction or just pick up where I left off (25g/day). I have significantly increase my water intake today. Any suggestions?

    Thanks-
    Martha

If you feel yourself experiencing strong cravings, I'd head back to induction for a couple days.

Otherwise, if you feel fine, and you feel you're back in control, just pick up where you left off, and move on.

I was on Atkins a year ago and I stayed on Induction the whole time,.. I am starting up again, and I'm scared to go on to the next fase, because Induction has helped me so much! But Martha I read in Dr.Atkins that it is ok to stay on inductin the whole time if that is what you want,.. but like they said, it is a good idea to go back on it for a few days !

Don't forget though, staying on induction for too long can make you metabolically resistant to weight loss through ketosis. Your body will learn to adapt to the 20 g a day, and in the long run it will be harder to loose weight.

This is part of the reason that Dr. Atkins has people going on to OWL within 14 days.

Hello I am new here, I am on day 13 of my induction and I feel great, but i have only lost 6 lbs and i thought i'd lose more than that. I think i'm ready for the next phase but I'm sort of afraid to go there because I've gotton comfortable with the induction phase, but i want to lose more weight!! I feel your pain and frustration, but one thing I love about Atkins, I don't have sugar cravings or cravings for bread or pasta, so maybe i should move on:crying:

    sexy mom,

You don't say how much weight you have to lose, but 6 pounds on induction is fine. Those with more weight to lose, lose more on induction as a general rule. I stayed on induction for about 5 weeks when i started, but I was glad to move on into OWL to increase my food choices and make sure my metabolism wasn't stalling out.

I think staying on induciton a bit longer than 2 weeks is fine, personally, but it's definitely an individual decision. There are those on this board who feel that 2 weeks is plenty long and you should move on to OWL at the end of the 2 weeks regardless of the weight you've lost.

    Good luck to you

I think those who are nervous about moving passed induction would do quite well by picking vegetables from the OWL list of the allowed vegetables, at least - even if they still stay at 20 g net carbs. More variety, eh? That's always good.

I think that increasing the total by 5 g net carb/day isn't likely to derail the vast majority of people. So, my advice would be to go ahead and add an additional 5 gm of veggies daily; and be sure to pick veggies from the expanded list of acceptable foods. Having that additional variety and flexibility may help make this WOE (way of eating) a llife long habit.

If you are METABOLICALLY RESISTANT it is OK to continue induction for an extened period of time. Of course you have to go through the phases as specified in the book. Most veterans wouldn't suggest it for anyone not MR. Martha, I know this wasn't your question but just my two cents regarding induction.

What I would do is a few days of induction. I recently had a bread incident and I am trying to eat lower carbs for a few days and drinking my water (as you said you were). Atkins does say in DANDR that if you will be having a higher carb day to lower before but often they are not planned and then you can help by lowering for a few days after.

The big thing will be getting past the cravings again. That's what I have found to be the toughest part of messing up.

    GOOD LUCK!

Sometimes it is helpful to go back to DANDR and read. The following is copied from Atkins Nutritional web site. I have not compared it to the actual DANDR but my recollection of the book is that this excerpt is from the book. FWIW, I stayed on induction for 9 months and lost 90 lbs before moving on to OWL and continuing my weight loss.

"In order to decide if this is the right time for you to move on, ask yourself the following four questions:

    Are you bored with Induction?
How much weight do you have to lose?
How metabolically resistant are you to weight loss?
Are you willing to slow down the pace of weight loss in exchange for more food choices?

If you are bored, and this boredom could lead to not complying with the rules of Induction, by all means move on to OWL after two weeks. However, if you are comfortable staying in this phase, and you still have a lot of weight to lose, you can do Induction safely for six months or more. If you do not have much more weight to lose, it is advisable for you to advance to OWL so you can cycle through all the phases of the program.

If you are metabolically resistant to weight loss?which you will know by how much weight you lost in the first two weeks and by comparing your results with the categories in the metabolic resistance tables (See What Is Your Degree of Metabolic Resistance?)?you will lose weight relatively slowly. People with high metabolic resistance can benefit from doing Induction longer because it gives them time to correct metabolic imbalances they may have developed over time. These include insulin resistance, blood-sugar imbalances, carbohydrate addictions and allergies. Once the metabolic imbalances are corrected, weight loss may speed up.

But after all is said and done, to a large degree, your decision to continue Induction or move to OWL will depend on your personality and lifestyle. If you are the type to just go for it and can easily make your life work around the Induction eating program, you may decide to stick with it until you drop some more weight. Another person, who perhaps is under a lot of stress and wants to relax a bit about food choices, might choose to move to the more liberal phase of OWL. This brings us to the last, and ultimately the only, answer that matters. Is a longer period of time until you get to your goal weight the trade-off you're willing to make to have more food choices? It's up to you. A young, active man who loses weight easily may chose to move to OWL after two weeks, while a menopausal woman who has high metabolic resistance may chose to stay on the strictest phase until she gets close to her goal weight. The decision is yours alone and is another example of how much individualization is possible on Atkins.

I like induction - it's safe. It's easy to say '20 carbs' a day, and I'm done. The only problem is that (and this is MHO) you won't eat 20 carbs per day for the rest of your life. Atkins allows for ongoing weight loss, that you control. Everyone NEEDS to know their CCL (critical carb level) so that for the REST of your life you know where you need to be to maintain your weight.

If you go off induction, to the point that you kick yourself out of ketosis - I would suggest going back to induction levels til your back in ketosis. Once your in ketosis - go back to your 25 carbs/day.

I highly suggest that you move out of induction after 2 weeks, and figure out your CCL - once you figure out your CCL, then you can really play with your numbers. Eat induction level carbs - 20 carbs one day - then max (your high end CCL) to keep your body guessing. This also allows for MAXIMUM flexibility on what you eat and really helps with the variety of the foods you can eat.

    Good luck!
