I get so confused about "net" carbs. Exactly what does that mean? One lady at the health food store said you only have to worry about the net carbs. Then she said to subtract the grams of fiber from the carbs and that's the net carbs.

Saying I'm confused is putting it mildly

Any help/clarification would be appreciated!!!
Thanks

That's what net carbs are: total carbs minus grams of fiber. For instance:

1 cup of green beans = 9 carbs
Total fiber = 5 carbs
Net carbs = 4 carbs

The ONLY carbs you count toward your daily intake is the NET carbs. Many foods out there do not have fiber (i.e. meat and fats), so there is no fiber subtraction.

HTH!

Hi, Rockysimm1

Kellie's right on, of course!

... But do beware of other things being subtracted from the net carb count. Especially be wary of any sort of sugar alcohol (maltitol, xylitol, sorbital, etc.) and of glycerine. Some people react to these items as if they were sugar. So, in the beginning, do not subtract anything but fiber (yeah, even if it's from Atkins Nutritionals). Later, when you feel comfortable, you can experiment with these items and decide how they impact your particular metabolism.

And I always thought Net carbs were carbs we picked up while playing on the internet.

... and, if that is the case, I'll hang here where I KNOW the carb count is low!
