Shannon
I find it at health food stores or grocery stores that advertise themselves as natural or whole food sellers, like Whole foods market (formerly Wellsprings).

Welcome and stop back often!

I can't speak to Florida, but I get it at Trader Joes and Nature's Fresh Market Place.

OK, someone has to say it...

Yeah, the good Dr. recommends it, but I wouldn't exclude regular bacon until you find the nitrate free stuff... It's more expensive and looks yukky (grey instead of red), and the regular stuff isn't harming a majority of us.

I get mine at Whole Foods. The bacon I get looks like cured bacon because they color it with beet powder. Don't know if I'd find grey bacon all that appetizing!

Like Mikey, the only nitrate free bacon I've ever seen was grey.

So I've never tried it. Which leads me to the questions:

If it has no sodium and isn't cured, is it bacon?

What does it taste like?

Not enough to pay money for grey "meat". I'll eat my nitrates, and I'll LIKE it.

Well, it tastes pretty much the same to me except it's much less salty. There are two different kinds that I've gotten: plain bacon and applewood smoked. The applewood is by far the tastiest and the one I usually get.

I've only seen nitrate-free bacon at one Health Food store I've been at. I didn't get it - just don't have that kind of money. I avoid the nitrates in other meat products as much as I can and that's that.

Good luck with your bacon-hunting!

I tried a couple different brands of nitrite-free bacon, the prepackaged type, and thought they were both yucky.

Then one day at Whole Foods, I asked the butcher if their bulk bacon was nitrite/nitrate free - he informed me, nicely, that they don't carry ANY products cured in that manner. So, I bought a pound of the thickly sliced, normal looking, beautiful bulk bacon. DH and I both agree - it is the BEST bacon, of ANY kind, we've ever eaten! Ouis is right!

I had been paying $8.99 for a 2 pound pkg. at Safeway; this stuff is $5.99 a pound, so a little pricier (as is EVERYTHING at Whole Foods, AKA "Whole Paycheck" at our house!) but I prefer to eat it and we love it, and by gosh, WE'RE WORTH IT!

So that's my commercial du jour....

Ok, Char.

I've come to trust your judgment. (fellow DaVinci devotee - LOL!) I'll keep an open mind and IF I ever see nitrate free bacon that resembles bacon, I'll give it a try.

We don't have any Whole Foods places near Hooterville.

"Whole paycheck"

I love that Char and it's so true! I'm going to check out the bulk bacon the next time I go.

LOL@Char

I've been known to pop into Whole Foods Market for one item and Then end up spending $50, mostly on cheese and olives.

Rob, that's the story of my life when it comes to that place. One time DH threw a couple bags of beef jerky in the basket as we passed the display. Those things were $8.00 apiece! I nearly had a stroke when I saw that on the receipt.
