I was just at my local Meijer store and found a LC bread made by Aunt Millie (Light Whole Grain). Here are the stats:
Calories: 35
Total fat: .5
Sodium 95 mg
Total Carbs: 7 g
Fiber: 3 g
Sugars .5g
Protein: 2 g

At first, I was so excited because it was only $1.69...but as I was scarfing a piece down, I read the ingredients. Sigh...too good to be true. It had WW flour, corn starch, and high fructose corn syrup.

But, I admit, it was pretty tasty. I ran the numbers through a hidded carb calculator and it came back with an actual carb count of 5.83. It's still relatively low, but what about the nasties (WW flour, corn starch, and high fructose corn syrup)? Would any of you eat it?

Thanks!!!

sounds close to nature's own bread that I have used in the past. But a few weeks ago gave it up thinking it might be slowing me down. I did lose 3 pounds that week. You might be able to get away with a slice per day but I would wait until pre-maintenance to add larger amounts in.

YMMV

Personally, I wouldn't touch it because I'm so paranoid about fake bread. But if you really want to know if it's okay, you should look at it as an experiment. It's OKAY to experiment with new foods. Just be clear with yourself if something isn't working.

What I do is use Ketostix. I eat the food for a few days and measure my ketones, and if I see any indication of a problem, I dump it. Another way you can do the same thing is look for a change in your breath (no more dragon breath) or a sudden gain in water weight. Or a stall. Any of those would be an indication it's not a good idea to eat that. Still, I prefer the ketostix because it gives you faster, more scientific feedback.

I've had so many bad experiences with whole wheat that I don't feel tempted by it. I did a lot of whole wheat for a couple of years, thinking that it had to be good for me. It looks so healthy, and it gets such a good reputation. But it was hard to maintain my weight eating whole wheat. I finally came to the conclusion it was little better than white flour and I was just torturing myself. But everybody's different.

Have you tried the Ezekial 4:9 bread? If I were going to experiment with a low-carb bread I might try that.

Hey Doc...thanks for the advice. The problem with the Ketostix is I don't usually register; and if I do, it's merely a trace. I don't get the dragon breath, but I do feel as if I've eaten something off the side of the road in the morning. That's about my only indication. I've always had a water weight "issue" so that's a toughie, too. I am not much of a bread eater (at least now I am not) but this one truly makes me leery. I have seen the bread you mentioned so maybe I'll try it.

Thanks!!!

Well, I've posted tips before on how to get good readings with the sticks. Timing is important, especially if you drink a lot of water.

But if you consistently get negatives, you should consider cutting your carbs down. It could benefit you a lot. Trying to guess whether or not you're in ketosis even when you have no feedback about it isn't a wise course, IMHO.

Doc,

have you ever gotten yourself checked for a wheat allergy? Just a thought.

Bread is a real toughy for me. I'm German and grew up on bread. Going without really yummy, crusty, hearty bread (I'm drooling just thinking about it)- and all those other wonderful things I know I can get at a German bakery in town - has been really hard.

Never give up! Never surrender!

It is a flourless, sprouted-grain bread, containing organic sprouted grains (wheat, barley, millet), malted barley, organic sprouted (lentis, soybeans, spelt), filtered water, yeast.

I wrote a very long post yesterday with lots of tips for using ketostix. And then my computer hung up before I could click Post Now. It's kind of hard for me to retype everything, but I'll do it in another thread sometime soon. I'm just kinda ticked off at my computer right now and don't want to think about it. (A new trackball on order from Ebay should fix the problem.)
