I know atkins recommends staying away from alcholic beverages, but if you are going to have drink on occasion whats best. I'm not really a wine or beer drinker, but I do like an occasional cocktail. I had a coconut rum and diet coke last time I was out because it was all I could think of that might be lc and still taste good.

Suggestions?

Hi, Beachcat.

I'm not familiar with coconut rum, but I'd suspect some carbs there.

Most spirits are acceptable, just watch the mixer. Rum & diet is acceptable, as is gin & diet tonic. Scotch & soda (as long as we're talking club soda or seltzer) is ok, too. At home, you can make some nice margaritas with Baja Bob's low carb margarita mix.

... and of course there's always ... (bow head reverently) ... the martini.

Before starting Atkins in late August I enjoyed my Friday night "White Russians" and have missed them dearly. Tonight I found and made a recipe from LowCarbFriends.com Recipe Room for LC Kahula posted by Ken. He claims it is 1.5 carbs per ounce. Poured over ice with heavy cream ...it hits the spot as a Friday night special treat! I don't know if any others have tried this or not. If you are interested in the recipe and cannot find it, please let me know.

... and looking this over, I forgot my usual caveats.

Alcohol is not for induction and should be used in moderation throughout ongoing weight loss.

That's because alcohol is a "fuel" which is easily used by your body. It will be used before anything else. While your body is "running" off the alcohol, it is not going to be burning any fat.

Also, alcohol, as it relaxes your inhibitions, can lead to poor choices in eating. i.e.: "a few nuts" becomes a bowl of nuts, "a few pork rinds" becomes a bag, etc.

Just a heads up!

I'm not much of a drinker but every great now and then I enjoy a margarita with Baja Bobs LC margarita mix (from netrition.com)

General points: The higher the proof, the fewer the carbs. What you have to watch for is your drink mixers as many are just loaded with sugar.

If you are into bourbon, try it with water or diet soda. Same goes for rum (diet coke). If you are at home you can make your own lc drink mixers or keep the lc ones handy for whenever. DaVinci syrups are good for home made LC drink mixers.

Sweet wines will have lots of carbs, where drier ones have fewer. Michelob ultra and Miller have lower carbs.

One word of warning... many people dont tolerate as much alcohol when low carbing. Also, the alcohol won't throw you out of ketosis, but you wont be burning fat until the alcohol is out of your system so it will slow you down in that respect.

I went out a few times and drank a few gin and club sodas or michalob ultras and I had stopped losing. The only thing I changed in my diet was the alcohol and in 3 weeks I went down 5 lbs.
I am used to going out with my friends and drinking all the time, but I realized that I just can't do that without pushing off weight loss. Every now and then I will have a low carb beer or something, but only once in a while.

Try Capt. Morgan's spiced rum with Diet Gingerale.... or Vodka with diet Tonic Water.
I found Diet Tonic at the Grocery store!!!!..
Mich. Ultra's are not bad and Miller lite is just as low. Bud Light Ice is low too.

Malibu Rum (coconut rum)has no carbs. I found a website that will give you the nutritional information for almost all liquors. I'll search it out and reply later.

At 5'0 I look like an Umpa Loompa..............

My nightly drink is Vodka and White Grape Diet Rite. Very yummy. My wife does Vodka and Diet Sprite.

Hi,

I had thought some was asking about baileys, I had found a site which said zero carbs, but I didn't beleive it. I just found another site which says it has 20 grams per 100ml:

http://www.weightlossresources.co.uk...er/alcohol.htm

I also found a site which said parrot bay rum had 7 grams of carbs per shot.

I am happy with the spiced rum drinks or thin ice.

(BTW, I just re-joined, the site had lost my log-in info after the crash.

Not necessarily, Christine. Try this:

1 oz (1 oz = 2 TB) Irish whiskey
1 oz vodka
1 oz strong leftover coffee
3 TB DaVinci Chocolate Syrup
2 oz Heavy Cream
4 ice cubes

Put in a blender and, if you have the fancy kind, set it for "frozen drink"; if you don't, blend on high until all the ice is incorporated.

Let me know what you think.

I normally drink Tequila shots with salt and lime. Baja Bob's strawberry margarita mix is really good but it has more carbs.
