Hi liftmyburden,

I used get those same kind of leg cramps and a doctor told me to increase my calcium. I know that you said you were taking calcium but you may want to consider using a different supplement. What I mean is that the supplement you are taking is probably in pill form right? Then it probably has fillers and your body is not absorbing all that you think you are. Our bodies generally only absorb about 50% of the pill form supplements we take. I now take a calcium supplement that is in isotonics form. That means it is readily absorbed by the body and when I take it my body absorbs approx 90% or more of it and I don't have those cramps anymore. You can find this calcium on this site: www.livehealthynow.unfranchise.com along with some other very good supplements. I also take the OPC-3 from this site. It is an antioxidant and will help your body to absorb the supplements that you do take. Give the calcium a try though. It helped me.

I checked with my pharmacologist about the potassium since I am on heart medication and have had two heart attacks with a by-pass surgery in between. He said the over the counter doses I was taking were no problem and that the potassium did not interfere with any other medications. However, whenever self-prescribing medications or herbal remedies or whatever, one should check with a doctor and, possibly, a pharmacologist.

I used to get leg cramps and still do on the rare occasion while i am sleeping. Instead of getting up i would just flex my foot really hard for a while in bed to stretch my calf out and the cramp would go away fairly quickly. This may help you too when you get a cramp.

By law potassium supplements are limited to 99 mg per pill. So it's difficult to get too much or even enough by supplements. Morton's lite salt has replaced some of the sodium with potassium, so if you start using that, along with the recommended veggies above, you should be getting enough potassium.
