They announced at my weekly Weight Watcher's meeting that they will be addressing the "Low Carb Diet Craze" at WW meetings throughout the land. They have a pamphlet and everything !!! I am missing the meeting so I stayed after to ask what they basic "message" will be. (I've been going to WW for 3 years prior to switching to LC and can't give up my group therapy). The leader told me it will be that 1) the weight loss is temporary due to the fact that the restrictive diet lowers calorie intake and weight will return when the dieter goes back to eating "normal", 2) that High Protein is hard on the body, 3) that the plans limit eating vegetables and fruits because they are carbohydrates. I made an attempt to defend (I wasn't very proud of how bad a job I did) without disclosing my "traitor" switch. But just wanted to FYI you all that you may be getting some feedback from the misinformed WW'ers.

...sigh...

Great. A new and ongoing source of misinformation. Thanks for the "heads up", Sheri.

PSHAW!!! What do they consider eating "normal?"

Tsk Tsk...clueless.

Of course they don't want people to stop paying to go to their meetings and buying their products.

Patricia,

you have a great point there - they don't want to lose people to a much, much better plan

I just find it ridiculous that WeightWatchers will provide information that they haven't researched Ticks me off!

Wonder what can be done about it?

Never give up! Never surrender!

...and yet, WW is quietly selling low carb bars. Hmmm...

In a weird way, I find it gratifying that the only way "they" can discredit us is by misinformation. Obviously, they feel that lc is a genuine threat.

And has it occured to them that people who follow any weight-loss plan will regain if they eat "normally", theirs included?

Please let me state that I am not slamming WW; I think it is a genuine choice for some. It's just unfortunate that people who don't know the facts will be influenced by lies and innuendo.

I think it just stands to reason that if you're on ANY diet plan and you go back to your old way of eating, you're going to gain the weight back. I mean, that's what got you to overweight in the first place, right?? The thing is, I know that if I go back to eating carbs, I'll gain all of the weight back. I'm not trying to fool myself into thinking that I won't. Maybe WW needs to turn the same critical eye on themselves. Nothing against them, they've helped millions of people lose weight and keep it off....at least those who have stayed 'on plan' have kept it off. It's the same with LC...stay 'on plan' and the weight stays off. JMHO.

Cheers!

Unless I'm mistaken, doesn't WW basically reduce caloric intake?

Also, I had an aunt who lost TONS of weight on WW back in the early '70s. She loved the plan. In the early '80s, I asked her if she was still on it, and she said "no, they've changed things so much, I couldn't stay with it. I went back to the old menus from the early days." To find out now that the "early days" of WW was basically low-carb!

I did WW before, 2 years ago. This Points system they're on is low calorie, low fat, low on the excitement.

I don't want to come off as some wacky conspiracy theorist, but...it's the same people that profit off of it that condone LC Lifestyles. Think about it - if EVERYONE finds out about how easy it is, then we won't by slim fast or lean cuisines, we won't buy pills to lower our cholestorol, regulate our blood pressure, cure depression, we won't prick ourselves with insulin, we won't need to visit the doctor that often, and we won't need to pay every week to cry about how we went over our daily point allowance.

Excuse me for the rant.

I have some friends on WW. As long as they continue to respect my way of eating, they are welcome to believe any garbage about it that they want. I don't trash other's eating choices, nor to I evangelize mine... I simply ask for the same courtesy from others.

Now, if they play the busybody and start getting on me about my choice, we will have a problem...

Oh, but this is how corporate inertia manifests itself.

Have you caught the latest WW commercial? It shows a smug looking girl ordering a cookie. Her friend on some "OTHER" diet (hint: could it be LOW-CARB???) says, "I could never eat that on my diet!"

Sexy Miss WW sneers and opines, "Maybe that's why you quit your diet, you fat amorphous porcine blob." [Well, she said something like that. I don't have a transcript handy.]

Well, to WW I say, I pity you, you with your cookies and low-fat ice cream puke! And let's not forget that perrenial WW favorite, FLUFFY MACKEREL PUDDING!
[See it here: http://www.candyboots.com/wwcards/fl...ckpudding.html ]

Do me a favor, Dr. I, DON'T get a transcript! I feel certain you have given us the gist of the dialogue.

Some of us will NEVER forget the fluffy mackerel pudding! Pffft!

ROTF!

Your post cracked me up! I literally just got off of the ww site because I've been wanting to contact them and say, "Get with the program!" Don't they realize that their lowfat (HIGH CARB!) 2 point bars are making people fatter!?? It's almost a conspiracy. I know because I'm a lifetime member who kept returning until I finally started realizing the treats, the skinny cows, the emphasize and focusing your day so you can eat a treat was making me crave more and more! I got my last ww magazine today and so many adds are low point cookies, etc. and yet they have articles about the rise of diabetes, how to stabilize your blood sugar, getting rid of cravings, etc. DUH! They're on the wrong track. If you go to their site there is even an article de-bunking the lowcarb 'fad.' They say the only reason people lose weight on it is because they're eating less. But they don't point out the reason we eat less is because we're so much more satisfied and we don't CRAVE all of the junky treats they constantly push! I guess I had to vent. Sorry so long! Thanks so listening. - Karen

Maggie, I guess we're not the only ones that have fond memories of Fluffy Mackerel PUdding. Alta-vista gave me 69 references to it. http://www.altavista.com/web/results...ls=1&avkw=aapt
