Hey Christine, Im just a bit taller than you at 5'2". Im fairly new to all of this, only 8 weeks into ATkins. Im currently at 120 shooting for 110, but so far Im not making any real headway in that direction. Ive only had a 1lb loss in the 8 weeks, so Im probably not the best person for a comparison. Im curious to see who posts though since I think those of us that are vertically challenged face some obstacles that taller folks dont.

I claim to be 5'2 but in all honesty, I barely hit 5'1 and a half. I was very athletic and I have a lot of muscle. My friends who are around the same height as me weigh allot less and wear the the same sizes as me. I would suggest that you concern your self with the way cloths fit and the sizes that you wear rather than driving yourself crazy over the numbers. Obviously we need the scale to go down women what but don't make it your main focus.
When I was 145 I was barrowing cloths from my friend who was under 130.

Another "shortie" here. Have a long way to go to get your your sig weight, but I am 4'10 1/2".
I have given up trying to figure dress size to weight loss. I have lost about 35lb and have only gone down about 2 dress sizes. Was busting out of a 20 but now a 16W.

I am 5' (just barely!) I am 147 right now and my goal is 115. I would be happy with 120 though. I am more muscluar naturally though so that 100-106 range is just not for me. I lost 8 pbs in the first 2 weeks but nothing since then. I am going into my 5th week soon.

I would also like to know what all of you "shorties" eat in a run of a day because I think I may be eating too much for my size. I am a big eater.

So if you ladies would, could you please post menus! Thanks and Good luck!

Hey Shorties
I'm 5'1 and i'm restarting induction today...
I had a death in the family and though that shoulnd't be an excuse, i've fallen off the wagon..But I"M BACK...
So, i'm 5'1 and currently weigh about 145 - I used to be around 120 - before I battled my Thyroid problem. NOw that is under control !!
So, I need to loose a good 25 lbs. I'am also athletic built, and m usclar, I stopped going to the gym this summer,(I was just too busy) for years I've been going religiously about 4 days a week or more. I know with this WOE I WILL be able to reach my goal !! Especially getting back to the gym..
I'm glad i'm not alone in this world of short-ness !!

Hi, Christine.

As you can see, many members of the vertically challenged club are accounted for here!

Just try to make sure your "relating" your wieght loss doesn't become "comparing."

No two people are going to have the same experience with this way of eating. In some ways I was lucky, in that my "goal" turned out to be unrealistically modest. If I'd been aiming at my current weight, I might have become discouraged, since it was well over two years before I got there.

For slower losers, it's helpful to remember that just as important as normalizing your weight is the task of learning all about yourself and your reactions to various foods in different amounts. Those are the tools that make it possible to maintain that normalized weight once one gets there, so it's not such a bad thing if it takes some time to get there.

Hi, I am 5' give or take 1/2" I have been on Atkins since 6/3/03 lost 6 pounds on induction. Total lost 19 lbs. 5" off my waist. I have only gone down about 1 size started at a loose 18 now in a tight 14 or an ok 16. Goal is 110. Maybe lower. When I was 42 I got down to 105 and a size 7 by doing low fat with a lot of walking and weight training and about 1100 - 1200 calories per day. Still do about 1200 calories but I am not hungry like I always was on low fat, feel so much better on low carb.

Good luck to you on your low carb journey.

I too am only 5' tall. I started out my weight loss journey back when I was.....um....gee, I don't remember a time when I wasn't concerned about my weight. As a child I had to buy plus size clothes, as a teen I was in women's, and as an adult it was women's plus size.

On New Year's Day 2000, I realized I had enough of this battle. I broke down, went to my dr. and received approval for gastric bypass.

On April 11, one day before my oldest daughter turned 10, I walked into Beth Isreal Deaconess Hospital in Boston, weighing 250 pounds. I jumped off the cliff that day and had the surgery.

The weight came off very quickly and I began exercising on a regular basis. I managed to get to 185. Then something happened, it stopped. No more weight came off. I found myself back on the search for another weight loss program. See my dr. says I need to get to 115.

So, I started doing very low cal, low fat, little meat, some carbs (in the form of pasta and such)& lots of fruits, veggies. I went from 185 to 165. Again, I stalled. Nothing.

I increased my water, increased my exercise and tried to Somersize my way into a better weight bracket. Went from 165 to 178. Well that just sucked! I was so discouraged.

That was July. I found South Beach Diet at that point. I started trying to follow that. However, I do not have the time to cook the recipes the way they need you to, but I did at least follow some of the principles by increasing protein, and decreasing some of my carbs. I worked out 3-4 days per week rather than 2-3 days per week. The weight dropped a bit, went from 176 down to 151. Then again, I stopped. Nothing.

Frustrated, I found this site and began reading about Atkins. (yes, I now have the book and have begun reading it). Since August, I have made several attempts at doing induction and somehow manage to screw it up. Right towards the end of the day actually. I again increased my water to where I now drink about between 90 -100 oz per day, increased my protein, and reduced my carb intake. I know I am not following induction completely at the 20 carbs per day, but I have cut back to about 35 per day, versus 60 gms or more (up to God knows what before surgery) per day.

I am now sitting at 143-145. I have also increased my exercise to 5-6 days per week, sometimes twice per day with aerobics in the morning and strength training in the afternoon.

Although I am at my current weight, I believe that I have lost inches, I can now at my current weight share clothes with my 13 yr. old (she has some jeans and tops that I borrow once in a while) who is 5' 1" weighing in at 134.

I keep telling myself, if I can just find the willpower, the determination in myself to make through induction, that I can be successful with Atkins. I just haven't been able to get there. I somehow always mess up. I think it's because all of the meal plans that are suggested and that are in the book are full meals, 3 per day with a couple of snacks. This I think is where part (not all because I am responsible for the carbs I put in my mouth) come from.

Because of the surgery I am unable to eat large amounts of food at one time. I need to eat smaller portions, throughout the day. Also, I work full time, have 4 children, 1 DH, 2 dogs, housework, laundry, groceries, homework to help with and a whole list of other things. I don't stop till about 10pm and I start my day at 4:30 so I can find the time to workout in the morning. I do not have the time to cook extravagant meals just for me. I tend to make a meal for everyone else at night and try to only eat the meat and veggies.

Also, because of the surgery I cannot eat certain things because I will become very very sick to my stomach. (mostly foods which are high in sugar, such as candy, chocolate, and ice cream.) So that helps me out a bit. However I sometimes have a difficult time eating things like bacon, sausage, things with too much butter or fat.

I am trying to figure out how I can adapt this WOE to my situation. If any of you have any suggestions for me I would be soooooooo grateful.

For breakfast, I have been eating 1-2 eggs and some coffee with light cream (heavy cream makes me throw up). Somtimes, I will have pepperoni slices with 1-2 oz of cheese such as meunster or cheddar. I have taken the suggestions of the awsome people on this board and ditched the Atkins shakes & bars, v-8 and cottage cheese.

I have been bringing celery and cucumber slices to snack on during the day, sometimes, if I haven't had cheese at breakfast, I will put some cream cheese and olives on the celery or a boursin (light) on the cucumbers. Sometimes I will eat a few almonds. I have yet to measure out what equates 1/4 cup, but I average about 15-20 nuts.

Lunches are not too bad, I bring a fish fillet (Gorton's frozen & preseasoned, not breaded, the grilled one)and usually some spinach, sometimes brussel sprouts. Sometimes, it's a salad with meat on it (grilled chicken, Boar's head turkey, or roast beef). I will usually have 1 16 oz diet pepsi during the day (drinking 1/2 at work and bring the other 1/2 home)in addition to about 2 33oz containers of water that I keep on my desk.

When I come home, like I said, I will try to only eat the veggies (no corn, carrots, peas and such for me)and the meat (chicken, beef, fish, whatever)and that's it. I have learned to only make enough pasta, rice or potatoes for everyone else so that there is not enough for me by the time I get to my plate ( I put the food on their plates for them). I have managed to get my kids down to eating only a 1/4 cup serving of those foods at dinner versus the 3/4-1cup servings they used to get for themselves. I now cook at least 2 veggies with every meal and try to give them a larger portion of meat. I do not make them finish what is on their plate, I allow them to stop when they are full, which is something that I was NEVER allowed to do while growing up.

My biggest downfall is after dinner/before bed. I find I need something. I am always searching for something that will satisfy me. Sometimes, I will munch on some celery or cukes with nothing on them. Sometimes I will have a few more nuts. Sometimes, when I just have to have something sweet, I will have an Atkins Edulge "ice cream". But then there are the times that I just cannot stay away from the carbs and I end up eating popcorn (no butter) or crackers, a granola bar, pretzels, a small bowl of cereal.

That's when I have blown induction once again. I cannot seem to get through the 2 weeks. I really WANT to be able to do this. I WANT to be healthier. I WANT to break this addiction to carbs. I WANT to free myself from the constant guilt of what I put in my mouth. I DON'T want to have to think about it eventually. I WANT to be a normal person who is not obsessed with what the next food item should be. I WANT it to be second nature for me.

I WILL continue reading the book, reading the posts and reading those labels. I just need some guidance on how to incorporate this WOE into the lifestyle I have to live with. Please give me some suggestions if you have them. I really NEED the help.

Thank you for reading this and listening to me ramble on so much. This is the first time I have actually written it all out like this. I wish all of you the best of luck on your journey to become as healthy as you can be. Although this has been and will continue to be a struggle for me (hopefully not forever), I will be here with you, offering advice if I can and reading all of the posts. I will be here to support all of you as we travel this road together.

The hardest thing I think for us shorties is that most of us want to weigh in at about 115 lbs. That means our calories should be 1150 per day. Less than the minimum recommended calories per day for good nutrition. Of course that is where activity level comes in. We must increase our activity level just so we can consume the minimum 1200 calories per day.
It is so hard to spend 30 min to 1 hour of our overbusy days exercising. Something else that we really enjoy doing usually must be sacrificed.

Another "shortie" here! Like you, Maria, I claim 5'2" but that's stretching it a bit

and like Maggie, I didn't actually aim for my current weight range. I was thrilled to be at 120 again. But very slowly I continued to lose weight, much to my great surprise.

At some point during the last part of the journey, most of us will have to balance what weight we're able to maintain with how much effort we're willing to put in. The effort of being aware of what we eat, avoiding triggers, eliminating "extras," watching portions, trying for optimum nutrition, getting back on track, and exercise, among other things.

To sbarstow, try a protein snack afterdinner/before bed. I find it very satisfying and helpful for eliminating refrigerator raiding. One of my favorites is to scramble an egg, with a little grated cheese topping. It feels somehow very nurturing.

Yaz, I can really relate. I'm from the land of pear shaped ladies, too. Generations of them! Hang in there, shorties, you can do it!
