My family was invited over to friend's house for dinner tonight. She knows I've been LCing.
(I've lost 18Lbs in 2 1/2 mos. She also is familiar with Atkins because her husband has done it) This was the menu: tossed salad w/ Kraft "free" ranch dressing, roast pork marinated in honey/brown sugar/soy sauce, hash brown casserole, corn, peas, glazed carrots, rolls, and butterscotch pie!!! Hello-can you say a zillion carbs? Since she knew about my WOE, I assumed she would fix something Atkins-friendly, so I didnt eat anything at home before the meal. I really had no choice but to eat. I ate small amts of pork, potato, lots salad and no dessert. Does this sound like sabotage to you? She really is a good friend, albeit a skinny one. Any body out there ever have this problem? How did you handle it?

I won't get into the sabotage question, because I'm not a mindreader. You did the right thing by eating the things you can eat and just getting through it. Don't feel resentful, though. Nobody is going to do your WOE for you. You have to be fully accountable for what you put in your mouth. You can't expect any help from anybody. That's why I don't even bother to tell people about this diet if I can avoid it at all. Most of the time it sets off a long explanation that makes me uncomfortable and half the time it leads to sabotage behavior, which I hold myself responsible for for opening the subject in the first place.

You sure this is a friend? Sounds like she deliberately set the menu against LC. Should have asked her ahead of time what the menu was.

Tell me about it. I told one of my coworkers that I as "doing Atkins" and that I don't bring money into the office, that way I don't use the vending machines (i work nights), what do they do? All of a sudden they have a "candy money jar" on the table to use if you want something from the machines and you don't have the money or change. HOW SWEET :-( They work days, they can get money or change anytime not problem why the jar? Also this jar is located on my dest.....they claim no room for it anywhere else; hmmmm. Oh and one last thing since it the eating season (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years) the "treat" bowl or dish or whatever is to located on my desk (you guessed it cuz there no room anywhere else). Ok now, if that ain't Sobotage what is? But the Great thing is if i was doing anyother "plan" all this would be a problem, but its not. I just whip out my celery and cream cheese with my cup of green tea (which I have learn to love), look at it all and smile. "With Atkins life is sweet enough."

If God is for me, who can be againist me?

I wouldn't assign blame to your friend without a lot more evidence. People who never did low carb have little idea what it's about.
My Dad has actuallu offered me cheese crackers while I was at his house. And said "you can eat cheese can't you?". I always bring something I can eat whenever I'm going to someone's house. If the person is into low fat type foods then your low carb is diametrically opposed to what they believe is healthy. Cut them some slack.

It may have been sabotage, but more than likely it was just an oversight. She may not even think about things the same way you do - even with her husband having done the same plan. Give her the benefit of the doubt this time, and just be careful the next time you're going to eat with her.

Hey Hart...

I've rarely seen a vending machine that didn't have peanuts or sunflower seeds in it... Spend their hard earned cash on that!

Hartensia, just out of curiosity, what do you do working at nights?

I have the same problem with my coworkers. I just started my job a few months ago, and to be nice and make me feel welcome, they put a candyjar on my desk for everyone to munch from. Luckily, it's hard candy so I don't have any problem resisting it. Now, if it were chocolate, that would be a really different story.

I also work nights, I used to say that caffeine and sugar were my friends -- well caffeine is still somewhat, but sugar NO. Hey Mikeyrat, if Hart is anything like me (I don't bring any money to work either) we do not go near the vending machines LOL.

No matter how you look at it, putting a candy dish on a co-workers desk, when that co-worker has specifically mentioned that candy is NOT an option is rude and disrespectul. My solution: ask them (politely) to find someplace else for the dish - if it's still there, throw it away. Your desk, your rules.

I have a vegitarian friend. She keeps changing what she eats because she had an iron problem. Sometimes she's a full on veg, and other times she'll eat a little chicken or fish. Each time she comes to my house, I ask her what she's eating and what she's not and then fix the meal accordingly. Then again, we've been best friends for over 20 years.

It just seems to me that good hosting requires consideration toward your guests. You wouldn't invite a diabetic over, knowing they are diabetic and then announce that its a dessert buffet, right? You wouldn't invite a vegitarian over and serve steamship round of beef right? This acutally almost sounds like something for Miss Manners, I'd love to see what she'd say in this situation.

Frankly, I would have just said, "Gosh, I'm on that low carb diet and I've made such good progress. The food you've offered looks lovely, but I can't eat it." I know that you worry that it might make HER feel bad but hell, she didn't worry about making YOU feel bad.

About the candy, I'd just say, "Look this is too tempting for me and I've done so well on my will power, I'm going to move this over to so and so's desk." And be done with it.

I've been labeled as blunt, but at the same time, if you've got a mouth, use it, just be diplomatic.

I would not have said it was sabotage at all, not understanding LC dieting is too blame for her menu choices. Just had a halloween party with around fourty people and I actually joined the host in the menu to insure there was LC food there for "our people" to enjoy..Made some wonderful LC appetizers for us to 'pop in our mouths' while people were busing eating some 'nasty chips'...
Actually came to be that the 'non-lc people' ate our appetizers too...
Always remember that just because you choose to live this life doesn't mean that all will be supportive of your choices..just do what you feel is right and if you need to make your own menu, I am sure no one will be insulted when explained...

I started Atkins five or six days before Labor Day. All our gatherings, of course, center around food! I knew my dad's girlfriend was making ham and green beans. I offered to bring deviled eggs so I could make them low carb. Other than those three foods, I knew I would probably not be able to eat anyting. Well, I was trying not to eat before I went but got ravenously hungry about 2 hours before I went, so I ate an omelet. Well, when I walked in, I noticed the girlfriend had dumped a whole box of brown sugar and a can of pineapple on top of the ham when she cooked it, so that was out (of course, I had not told anyone what I was doing), so all I could eat were deviled eggs, green beans, and a slice of tomato. I said nothing, just put what I could eat on my plate. About halfway through lunch, the girlfriend asked me if I was just not hungry or what, so I told her I had eaten an omelet 2 hours earlier because I just got too hungry. She said "you'll take a plate home for later won't you?" and I did....gave it to DH!

Anyway, there's always a way around any food situation. It's a good idea to eat before you go, too, so if there's nothing legal you can wait until you get home.

I must comment that I really have a considerate manager! She's a Halloween NUT and always brings a big buffet for our party. She stopped me the other morning and asked if I had any ideas for LC goodies! We came up with several, since there are three or four people in the office doing LC. We do, however, have about five bowls of candy sitting around the office right now and someone's always bringing sweets for some reason! Luckily, I've been almost anorexic since about day three of this WOE, so nothing really bothers me. I have trouble eating what I'm allowed to eat, anyway! Ain't that great!

Anyway, good luck with your friend....I think I'd eat before going to her house next time!
