Hi everyone,

I've lost 35 lbs since Sept. 3rd, and have faithfully stuck to my eating and exercise plan. Unfortunately, I still weigh over 350 lbs. I used to play football and was quite healthy. Now I walk 6 miles a day, 3-4 days a week and do an ellipical trainer and lift weights at the gym 3 days a week.
Being 350 lbs, if I jog/run, will it mess up my knees? I have enough 'wind' to do it, but I don't know when it will be safe? 325 lbs? 275 lbs? 250 lbs?
I could use some input on this.

Thank you,

bigdaddyharris

Only your body will be able to answer this question for you. My knees give me trouble when I run at any weight over 150, but I've seem others who can do it at any weight. Try it very slowly, and listen to what your body says to you.

I have a bad knee (Knee cap pops out of joint once in a while, ick). I've found those elliptical trainers are fabulous. What I used to like to go is to go as fast as I could and sustain it. Its just as good as running, only easier on your body. Give that a try for a while.

bigdaddy,
You might post in the "just do it exercise" forum and get more feedback. It's my gut feeling I would wait until the weight is at or below 250-ish.
just my $.02

I am thinking that if you can walk 6 miles a day without your knees hurting, you can probably run some, but as Beth said, only your body can answer this question.

I would be very careful to get good running shoes - no trying to do it with any old pair of sneakers. I would also advocate that you take it very slowly and back off if you have any pain.

A structured program like Couch to 5K might be good for you; it's what got me back to running after more than ten years. You might also want to read the 300-pounders thread on the same running site for some perspective.

Good luck, whatever you decide.

Bigdaddy....

I've been wondering about you. I remember when you first posted back in Sept. I was wondering how you were doing.

Sounds like you;re doing OK. For me (I started at 337), I couldn't have run... heck, I still worry about it at 270, but as long as the weight is coming off and everything else is going fine, there's no rush.

Personally, I'd wait. You walk as often and as much as I and it really seems to be the ticket. I still do some TaeBo basic 3 to 4 times a week, and TaeBo Advanced 1 to 2 times a week, and they're really fairly low impact.

But even saying that, I think one must be careful and moderate the exercise like running when walking will do. The next 50 will probably be as easy as the first 35, THEN you can evaluate how you feel about jogging. Both my knees were major messed up. I think my weight loss, combined with my walking have built them so I WILL be able to run comfortably at 250, which is my hope. Until then, I ain't pushin' it.

Joggin in place on a trampoline be a choice. It is easier on the knees and you could start slow. I have one and love it Im not a jogger and I have had knee problems so it helps. God Bless you.

If God is for me, who can be againist me?
