I did not look extensively at the site, but here are my comments about their nutrition labels(for example, see Bagel nutrition facts )

They advertize 3 g. net carb, but that refers to a serving of 1/2 bagel. Half a bagel is only 1.5 oz, which is a pretty dinky serving size.

So, it's true you can "control" your carbs, but this isn't really a particularly low carb food. As they use whole grains, this product might work well for someone in maintenance, or who follows one of the LC plans with a more liberal carb allowance.

They do the same thing with the muffins - a muffin is 3 ounces, but a serving is 2 ounces. Further, the muffin's 2nd ingredient is maltitol. Maltitol is notorious for either causing diarrhea or stalling weight loss. If you are a person who tolerates maltitol and are okay with doing the fancy arithmetic with your carb count, these are probably okay for an occasional treat.

I think this practice is, um, disingenuous, at best. Someone could easily overlook the portion size and miscount their carbs. Personally, I try to avoid buying from companies that are willing to mislead their customers.

Brynn,
Low carb bread scares me. I'm afraid that if I eat it, it will lead to a slip up with the real stuff. After a year on program, I only allow myself a LC tortilla or a high fiber cracker a couple of times a week. My theory is better safe than sorry.....

Low carb bread doesn't interest me either. A friend dropped a slice off at my house yesterday(like a piece of gold at $5.29 a loaf). I ate it this morning with my eggs. I wasn't impressed and wouldn't go buy any myself. I also eat the La Tortilla tortillas or some high fiber crackers once in a while, more for the fiber than anything else. I think I've totally lost any interest in bread.

Joyce, same experience here. I wanted low-carb bread SO BAD... until I finally got to try it. And then I threw the unfinished loaf away. Expensive, unfinished loaf.

You know what it is... some foods just will never be the same without real carbs. It's not just about the taste. It's the carbs. The feeling that they give you.

I love Nature's Own Low Carb Bread. It tastes a lot like wheat bread to me, it doesn't make me stall either. It is only $1.99 a loaf at my Market Basket.

LOL, Nature's Own is the one that costs $5.29 a loaf here.

Totally not worth it.

Must be a Texas thing........ Nature's Own is under $2.00 at Drug Emporium. The Atkins shakes are $1.50 as are the bars. The prices that most of you find for LC foods would be enough to keep me from ever trying them.

Just a comment on WalMart from the hinterlands. Many things that folks here have said they get at WalMart are not available at my WalMart (yes, it's a "super" WalMart). Even though WalMart is nationwide, the stock varies geographically.

Examples (mentioned by those in the forums as being available at WM, but not at mine) include all of the low-carb milk beverages; all of the low-carb ice creams except LeCarb; all of the low-carb breads except Aunt Millie's; La Tiara taco shells; and more that escape me at the moment.

Not trying to tell anyone how/where to shop, but those of you more "WalMart advantaged," do not assume anyone with access to WalMart has access to the same products.

Wal-Mart, however, is generally *very* good about carrying products that it's customers ask for. Especially if they're competing with larger grocery stores like Pick & Save.

I've watched my Wal-Marts LC section practically double within a 2 week period. Granted, it's spread out throughout the store, and not just in one location, but they're off to an astounding start.

Hmmm, Shrinky, I'll bet anything that's exactly the problem here. The only competition is a locally-owned grocery that doesn't come near WalMart in price. So there's virtually no competition. Boy, did the owner of the local store lobby against WalMart being allowed to add on the grocery department (which only happened recently). He (local owner) used to own two grocery stores, and since WM got groceries he's had to close one.

At any rate, since you say they are good about listening to what customers ask for (and I have noticed signs that they are trying to feature LC products more), I will definitely start lobbying for some of them! Thanks!

The walmart by me doesn't carry a lot of the products that I see mentioned here. But I keep looking. Less than 2 weeks ago, after someone mentioned carb countdown milks (including chocolate milk) I went looking for it. They didn;t carry it. Yesterday I was in walmart and they had them. so it may just be a matter of time or perhaps someone asked them to start carrying it.
