I have heard that there are a few things out there that can boost your metabolism (I already know about exercise-bleh). But I was wondering about green tea and coconut oil. How much does it take to do any good? Does it matter what kind you are using, especially with the coconut oil. Does anyone have any experience with these?

I've mentioned this before, but you can boost your base calorie-burning rate by wearing lighter clothes and lowering the thermostat in your house.

cayenne pepper, hot chiles, hot mustard, flax seed, cinnamon and green tea can all have a part in either boosting your metabolism or stabilizing blood sugar. cayenne pepper elevates metabolism for a few hours about 25%. there is an article in carbhealth mag this month about this topic.green tea is also a good choice.

I also read elsewhere that ginger, turmeric, cilantro, and one other which I cannot remember the 4th one - I believe it said you needed to eat a teaspoonful of each one of those for it to be effective though. (NOT all at the same time! )

Since we love cilantro and ginger anyway, that's easy, and I've recently started adding turmeric to more recipes and like it!

quote:
I also use Ephedrine products sometimes with great success. While my normal loss per week is 1.1 lbs per week, it goes up to 1.8 lbs with Ephedrine. But it isn't for everyone. Some people don't have a tolerance for it, and people with high blood pressure shouldn't take it.

Ephedrine shouldn't be taken by anyone. Just to name a few of the risks; Ephedrine (and it's less carefully produced and dosed cousin, the "herbal" ephedra) can be a grave risk for people with any kind of underlying (i.e. undiagnosed) cardiac problems, any type of seizure related disorder, blood pressure instability, Reynaud's syndrome, and anyone who has to undergo drug testing for employment (the metabolites - without further testing - give you a positive for amphetamines).

Ephedrine is completely absorbed with oral administration, is distributed throughout the body, and crosses the blood-brain barrier. Ephedrine and other sympathomimetic drugs (eg, cocaine, methamphetamine) are derived from phenylethylamine. They differ only by a single substitution of one of the carbons on the benzene ring, the terminal amino group. Side effects include nausea, dryness of mucous membranes, restriction of peripheral circulation (raising blood pressure), cardiac irritability (palpitations) and an occasional seizure.

None of those risks are worth taking just to possibly and only slightly improve your weight loss.

Thank you, Brighty for your very well said response. Ephedrine can be very dangerous, and yes, it can cause positive drug tests.

The question was about green tea and coconut oil. Please keep to the topic. And, please, let's keep this nice.

Blessings!

quote:
If it was so dangerous, the government would have pulled it off the shelf quickly like Fen-Phen.

Asprin is a drug. Fen-Phen was a drug, controlled by the FDA and could be pulled by the government.

Ephedra, Mahaung, et al are food/dietary supplements and under no US government guidelines or control.

Unless you can cite credible medical studies that have shown ephedrine to be safe as a weight loss drug, please do not promote its use here.

the best metabolism booster you can get is to increase your lean body mass. That comes from resistance (weight) training. It'll increase your basal metabolic rate, and help burn up those fat stores, too! Please stay away from ephedra and similar stimulants!

Flutterby, I drink a lot of green tea & have for a long time & still have a slow metabolism. I've just recently become aware of the coconut oil thing through some of the postings from Kumus, (where are you girl?) Have you read the info at ?www.tropicaltraditions.com? I've hunted up some of the books they refer to at the library and think it sounds promising. Recently I stocked up on the Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO), but too soon to see yet.
Also check out at Yahoo groups:

Hope this helps.

Bright, who are you quoting in your posts? I'm trying to find the original references and cannot seem to do so. What am I missing?

Thanks!

Chromium, GTF is supposed to increase insulin sensitivity. It could be a helpful suppliment.

And yes, I agree, Ephedrine, aka Ephedra, aka Ma-huang is definitely a dangerous, albeit natural, supplement. I wouldn't touch it with a 10ft. pole.
