We used to get SUCH great deals on meat at our Von's. I'm talking every Wednesday morning like clockwork. I'd go by the store on the way to work right around the time the meat guy was marking everything down because of the date. Talk about deals. We OFTEN got boneless ribeye steaks for $2 and they were GOOD ribeye steaks.

Lamb loin chops? $3 a package marked down from $8, etc.

Steaks around these parts are running $8 on average Geez!

Finally, I went by a Ralph's today and found a few thin porterhouse cuts for $2 each! Now that's way cheap. Of course, it's been over a week since I've found a deal like that so I bought them all.

Is anyone else dealing with this grocery strike?

Today, I went to 2 different stores looking for fresh savory and thyme and found nada. It's so frustrating.

    Thanks for letting me vent

Marcie, the stores in my area are not on strike, but the meat prices have sky rocketed for the last couple of weeks. It is getting very expensive to eat low carb. Oh well, even if I have to take out a loan to eat it is worth it .

I hope the strike is settled soon. I feel for all of the workers and their families.

Even the prices of meat at Walmart are going way up. I haven't bought any meat other than hamburger in weeks. In the summer I'd buy filet, 4 steaks for around $10.00, now it's over $22.00 for the same amount!

I totally agree with you Marcie! I haven't found any meat deals either. But it's giving me a chance to empty out my big freezer. I was just looking in there this morning, and it's starting to look like Old Mother Hubbard's Cupboard! Time to clean it out!

I used to get Filet Migion steaks for $5.99 a lb. marked down from $12.99 lb. Ground beef sometimes I would find for .99 lb. Lamb chops for $1.99, marked down from $4.99 lb. Rightnow I'm getting free chicken, so I'm not worried about chicken prices. But when I go to Ralph's, the meat counter is so sad looking, half full. I guess the butchers are on strike too; and the Deli (not that I buy there) is empty too, as is half the dairy section. The veggies don't look as pretty and kept up either!

DH said that Federal Mediators were going to be sent in Tuesday. Did that happen? I want to see how the strikers do through the holiday. People are going to shop because they really need to, where ever they can.

I just want my Ralphs back they way it was!!!! I'm tired of it!

    Hi Teri!

I haven’t talked to you for so long.

Yes, my Vons is SO sad. The produce section is only half full and the meat dept is terrible. I don’t even go in there unless I really need to. I’ve been driving out of my way trying to accommodate the strikers but my patience is wearing thin. Yesterday, I went to three stores searching for fresh savory and found none! I was trying out a new idea for stuffed mushrooms and had to sub a different herb. It was ok but I think the savory would have worked better and I can’t even try it out unless I go running all over the southland looking for a $2 package of herbs. It’s crazy.

    Argh!!!!!!!!!!!

Stater Bros. has Sirloin steak in their ad this week for $1.99/lb. As for Von's, I doubt if I will ever shop there again because their CEO is the one stalling the talks and their picketing employees have been so hostile at my local store that the police are called nearly every day. FYI--take a peek at what the CEO makes each year because it's in the millions. Some of the strikers only work part-time, so they will qualify for Medi-cal if their health coverage is reduced. Why should the taxpayers of California have to pay when the CEO's make millions?

Hey guys how about trying to grow some of your herbs at home? Many plants can be started from seed and grown in a draft free window sill during the winter months. Also, try buying plants from a garden center. You can either keep them growing or cut them down and freeze the useable parts. I feel so bad about your meat situation out there. Good Luck to all.

Repeat after me...There's no place like home.
