I was curious about whether or not anyone drinks during OWl. I really love to have a glass of wine with dinner. I know there aren't any carbs in wine, but I do know that it can stall you and I really wouldn't want that. Anyone with good or bad stories?

Hey there Nanci..I will tell you I had some drinks a few weekends back and it did not stall me persay, however it really made me feel horrible for the following two days afterwards.
There was nothing else that changed in my eating habits that day, so I really attributed the feeling to the liquor. Give it a try one night and see what happens with ketosis the next day, it may not effect you. I have noticed more and more with this life that many things effect me and many don't..
Give it a try..

Hello, I drank my 3rd night. A client of mine told me that there are no carbs in diet coke and Whiskey (Jack Daniels). I had 4 thru the night and it didn't seem to cause any ill effects toward my loosing. Michelob Ultra only has 2 carbs and tastes great too.lol

Nanci~

Once you're out of induction, alcoholic beverages can be included in a low-carb plan, but cautiously. While plain liquor (vodka, whisky, rum, gin) has no carbs, beer and wine do. And of course you have to keep an eye on mixers. If you find your weight loss stalling, cutting out all alcohol will probably help.

Also keep in mind that our bodies will burn alcohol first, so fat-burning stops while there's alcohol available. And many people find that their tolerance for alcohol is much lower while eating this way, so do be careful. And one more caution....alcohol can set the stage for off-plan eating, whether by impairing judgement at the time, or by creating carb cravings the next day. Alcohol is basically a sugar, so it awakens the sweet-tooth beast in some people.

Having said all that, I drink a glass of wine almost every night (I'm in maintenance) with no problems, and occasionally have a mixed drink or two, or a couple lite beers. So I'd say enjoy, just be aware.

Your question reminds me of my very favorite quote from Dr. Atkins....when asked whether it's true that red wine is good for your heart, Dr. Atkins replied, "Red wine is good for a lot of things, but I'm a scotch & soda man myself".

How do you find out what the carb counts are for different wines? Does anyone have a special type/brand they prefer??

In general, if you stick to a dry wine, white wine is about .3 gms of carbs per ounce - red is .5 per ounce.

Just keep in mind what Sky said. Your body will not be burning any fat when there's alcohol in your blood stream. Alcohol is a "ready to use" fuel (easier than sugar) and your body will always take the easy way out.

Since I'm 21 and in my senior year of college, I'll admit to having a few drinks here and there . My "usual" is Diet Caffinee-Free Coke and Morgan Rum. But I read that wiskey, tequila, vodka, etc (hard alcohol) is alright, in moderation of course. I just have to drink about twice the water I usually do the next day. It hasn't affected my weight loss at all, but I only endulge few and far between. Good luck to you! Cheers!

If I just have a wine or beer or two with a meal, it does not seem to affect me much. However, if I go to a football game or out with friends it does slow me down.

However at this point I figure I will be on this WOE for a long time, I am not in a hurry to drop more weight really fast. Actually the wife does not want me to lose any more, but I think I can easily go another ten pounds.

I usually drink white wine. I find that the next day, I am always down a pound or two, but that is strictly due to dehydration (whether I have one glass or three) irregardless of how much water I consumed that day. The pounds always come back, but I don't have a net gain.

I've had an occassional Diet Rite and Rum here and there. No problem yet!!!! (I'm not a big drinker either, just on special occasions.)

I have to chuckle, drink to dehydrate to move the scales, for the truly desparate. I do have a glass of wine or two most nights. I have a high stress job and am solo putting my son thru college, hence in severe 3rd yr. collegeitis financitis, and I find wine to be relaxing. I am sure it slowed my loss, but with only 25 to lose to begin with, I was ok with a slower loss. If I had a lot more to lose, I'm guessing I would have pitched the wine for a long time. So ymmv. Anyway, I'm 1 lb away from goal weight after 5 months and have set a lower goal weight.

After 3 weeks of this WOE, I've not dared to have any alcohol. My weight loss has been slow going enough! I do miss it though...especially when I'm out and about with a group of friends (don't miss it nightly with dinner). I'm glad to hear I will be able to enjoy a glass or two of wine in the future.
