Default OWL and Preparing for the Holidays

How are you going to prepare yourselves for the holidays? Have you decided to stay on plan or are you going to have a "day-off" and then right back on plan? Are you going to let your daily carb limits stretch a bit, instead of 30gm maybe 100gm for the day? Are you searching the recipe sites for great low carb recipes to "feed your need"?
Let's start a dialog to help each other get through the next 4 weeks!

Here is an article that has helped me so far.

How to Survive the Holidays on Atkins

You have to change your mindset. Talk to yourself.

“I am going to be around non-plan foods. I am eating for my health which means that this is for the rest of my life. Life includes vacations, holidays, birthdays, and visits to other people’s homes, picnics, weddings, and other assorted celebrations. I will not let myself eat garbage. I am worth more then a piece of cake or a spoonful of potatoes or even a dinner roll. I am not depriving myself of anything! I am treating myself with respect and high worth. I am determined to reach my goal of weight loss, good health and fitness. I will not let any person, event or circumstance stand in my way. I can stand up for myself.”

Say it as you are getting in the car. Say it as you are standing or sitting in front of the food. Say it as you congratulate yourself for making wise choices!

What always worked for me when the temptation was there to "cheat" (go "off plan") was the realization that I was only cheating myself. No one else would care, except perhaps those people who knew I was "doing Atkins" and might view it as a weakness on my part that they could intentionally, or unintentionally exploit to further undermine my progress. (You know, the kind of person that would tell you "one bite won't hurt you".) Rationalization is easy resolve takes planning. You can have a l/c plan for the Holidays and you will not be deprived.

Thanks Henry. I am really resolved to stay on plan. I am going to write out a nice menu to take to our friends house who is hosting our whole team on Christmas day. I am taking a low carb meat dish, veggie dish and a SF cheesecake. Then I will have no excuses.

I don't go anywhere else for meals so I don't have those problems. I will be preparing our Christmas meal and make some extras for my husband and son. But I will make sure I have my own low carb dishes and usually they will be part of the whole meal. If they want sweet potatoes or mashed potatoes I will fix that. For myself I will have the "faux potaotes" which is cauliflower and I can even put gravy (low carb kind which we all eat) on it. I will also fix them both a pie of their choice. It doesn't bother me not to eat it as I will most likely fix the "Mock Danish" for my dessert.

I like planning the meal around my low carb foods. As long as the dishes I make are good, they both will eat them very willingly.

    This is my planned menu:
    Roasted chicken
Deluxe Fauxtatoes (made with wild rice)
    Roasted Brussels sprouts with pecans
Sugar Free Pumpkin Cheesecake with pecan crust
Some else is making roasted cauliflower with cheese sauce, so I will have some of that.
I am going to make a 5 liter bottle of iced tea to sip on all afternoon.

Your menu looks pretty good. However, the wild rice is the only item on your menu that I question. According to the USDA nutrient database, 1 cup of cooked wild rice has 35 grams of carbs with only 3 grams of fiber.

I understand the concern, but this is a recipe from Dana Carpendar's book 500 Low Carb recipes. It is called Cauliflower rice deluxe. I said fauxtatoes but it is really a rice substitute! It only uses 1/4 cup of wild rice for 8 servings. It has 5 grams of usable carbs per serving.

I have her book, but have not tried that recipe. Let me know how you like it. (BTW, I do use plain cauli-rice a lot and find it works well as a rice substitute.)
