I'd been stalled for three weeks until I came down with a high fever and had to spend 6 days in the hospital where is was diagnosed as Diverticulitis, an inflamation of the colon.

This was a surprised since I had had a colonoscopy less than two years ago. When I asked where this came from, I was informed that this condition is worsened by eating nuts and seeds. Well I've got to admit that a handfull of nuts has been a favorite snack of mine and that peanut butter on celery has been an occasional lunch item.

In summary, I don't recommend this method for losing weight and you may want to consider limiting your nut intake.

Sorry you have not been feeling well. Definitely a bad way to lose weight! I always recall that with nuts and seeds. I have a friend who has Chrones (sp?) and whenever we'd eat out she'd have to pick the sesame seeds off her roll or else she'd be in the bathroom within 20 minutes "peeling the paint" as she referred to it. Those nasty little food items that get "stuck" in there cause a lot of problems.

Hope today finds you feeling much better.

Oh les! I'm so sorry! I hope you get feeling better soon.

You might be okay with peanut butter if it isn't crunchy. (I'm not sure on that so ask your doctor) My ex FIL had the same problem. He had to be soooo careful.

Glad you're out of the hospital now. Take it easy.

Hope you get back to feeling great again soon!

My Doctor is threatening me with a colonoscopy, I should probably have it done next time.

Les,

Sorry you had this problem.

Diverticulosis and diverticulitis are two different things. Diverticuli are outpouchings of the wall of the colon. When you have them, you are said to have diverticulosis.

It is only when one of them collects some stuff that can't get out and becomes inflamed that you have diverticulitis.

It is generally accepted (although not universally so) that nuts and seeds are more likely than some other foods to get caught in these pockets. That's why you're advised to avoid them.

People who have a normal colon wall have no problems with nuts. Nuts and seeds do not cause the outpouchings to occur. And I can't see how peanut butter (unless it's crunchy) could be viewed as a problem.

Check again with your doctor about this. I suspect that he/she will have no problem with your eating peanut butter.

My DH has diverticulosis.
Two years ago he had a bout of diverticulitis. Not fun. When we asked Dr. about the nut/seed thing we were surprised to find that different Drs have different opinions on this. Our Dr feels that if the nuts/seeds are chewed well and as long as his fiber intake is high enough, he shouldn't have a problem. And for the most part he really hasn't. He does know what a flare up feels like, and has been advised to cut down on both (nuts/seeds & fiber) for a few weeks if it does happen. He really listens to his body now, which is a very good thing.
