Can someone tell me why in recipes, cream cheese is always listed in ounces? I don't have a scale and I'm sure this is making some of my recipes to not come out just right. Does anyone know what the conversion would be to change it to cups, etc? Thanks

    Hi Donna,

Cream cheese comes in foil wrapped bricks, in 8 oz or 3.5 oz (I think) sizes. I have seen large size bricks at Sam's Club --- I don't know the weight of these or if it's any cheaper per pound and I would ony buy it that way if I was making a couple of cheesecakes at once. It also comes in 1 oz packs in a bag of 50 at Sam's, nice to bring with you to work for mock danish. I don't think it would be easy to measure by the cup like ricotta or cottage cheese is. Vloume wise, I think an 8 oz brick might fill aprox. 3/4 of a measure cup, only guesstimating here.

I don't weigh mine, I just divide the block into sections - i.e., if you're working with an 8 oz. block of cream cheese, divide it into 8 sections! Each one will then be an ounce. Makes it easy!

There are 1 ounce markings on the foil wrapper. Just open it, leaving the brick lying on the wrapper. Pull the side up that has the marks on it and watch where you cut it, using the markings as a guide. It's that easy!!!!!!

I guess I should have said that I'm in Canada. Our packages come in 250 gm. size. There are no markings on the package to show where 1 oz. is on the bar of cream cheese.

250 gm = 8.8 ounces. So dividing a brick in half gives you two pieces of about 4 ounces each, and each half can be divided two more times to give you one ounce slices.

    Hi,

Each ounce is about 28 grams (or so my scale says). BTW I found this great site that helps with conversions for cooking. Here is the link.

    weight - http://www.onlineconversion.com/weight_common.htm
Further, around here, Philly is sold in a tub and in bricks. The tubs are 16 ounces. Coincidently the tub is 2 cups liquid. I am not sure if that is by design or not.

    HTH,

    Mike

Information gladly given, but safety requires no unnecessary conversation.

Thanks Maggie. I tried looking it up in my cookbooks and no luck. I was sure someone here would know, and I was right. Thanks again.
