I was getting so much low carb stuff in my cupboards that I was running out of room, so I decided to get rid of some of the unhealthy foods. I had recently organized things in airtight containers and it was kind of hard to part with it...everything was so nice and neat! I called the local food bank and found out they could use the foods. I was concerned because they had been opened, but it was all recently bought and I didn't want to throw it away. So I took over about 25 pounds of rice, 20 pounds of flour and bread flour, sugar, powdered sugar, brown sugar, and shortenings. And a big unopened bag of pancake mix. I used to have a big family and was still buying things in the large packages. I think this new way of eating is going to be good for the whole family, because I'm cooking LC stuff for them, too. They seem to like it just fine. And I've removed any temptation.

Smart move cleaning out your cupboards. Great idea to think of giving those items to a food bank. Take care~ Susan LCE Member since 01/02

Terra, Thank you for that idea. I was hesitent to part with my things because I grew up in a house where the motto "waste not want not" reigned. I didn't think the food bank would take opened food packages. (kind of scary that they do) I will give mine a call tomorrow. Thanks, Jen Atkins since 11/11/03 140/133/115

I can relate to this one, Terra ~ one of my favorite things about low-carbing is that I've been able to reclaim so much cupboard space! Now that I don't have all those boxes of cereal, rice-a-roni, mac & cheese, hamburger helper, and instant mashed potatoes taking up space, my whole kitchen is neater and better organized. And I can devote whole shelves to more important things than food, such as candles and vases and sparkly dishes I hardly ever use - it's great! Sky Atkins since 8/03 186/144/under 150

The food bank said they could send the things to the soup kitchen and other places where they cook for people. I think the fact that they were in airtight containers made a difference. If they hadn't taken them I'd see if neighbors wanted them. It was a lot of $ worth to throw away.
