I've been seeing a lot of posts lately about all the Atkins breads and other breads going low-carb. When is a good time to add these in?

My $0.02 - these would be among the very last foods I would add in. I would far rather spend my carb allowance on nutritious vegetables and delicious fruits - I think you get much more nutritional bang for the buck. Here is a topic you might like to read, from the Veterans and Maintenance forum.

I agree with Laurelyn. First 10 to 15 carbs added after induction should be additional veggies and maybe some low carb fruit like strawberries. But I fully understand the desire to add a slice of toast with your fried eggs. How else can you clean your plate? If an dwhen you do add in bread remember to do so slowly. a slice a day for a while until you see whether it might stall you. I know this from experience. When I added in low carb bread It was one slice for breakfast at first. But then one week it was 2 at breakfast and 2 at lunch most days. I didn't lose that week even though I stayed within my carb allowance. YMMV

Yeah, do it last.

I don't eat those things at all. All the low-carb breads I've tried were terrible, anyway. The last one I tried was Trader Joe's Pumpkin Pecan bread. It smelled GREAT! It tasted like cardboard and sawdust, though, like all the others.

I do bread about twice a week, usually with my dinner. I found a 6 carb a slice made by orowheat that is VERY good, and I have only that one slice. However I would on most days rather pile on the green veggies - raw or cooked. This hasn't stalled me because of the moderation.

According to Dr. Atkins, breads and grains should be the very last thing you add back and some people are never able to do it. I think the main focus of the WOL is eating a more nutritious diet and trying to stay away from processed foods as much as possible. However, I must say that bread has never been the biggest thing for me, as it is for some people.

We occasionaly have a half sandwich of LC Bread, Golden Crunch from Natural Oven or something like that, only 3g of digestible carbs per slice. It is a very good change of pace!

Not gonna quit!

He..he, sorry I couldn't resist.

On topic though, I really believe that I've an allergy to wheat and by-products. For years I had flaky and scaly skin on my eyebrows and around my mustache. Since being on Atkins, this problem has nearly cleared up. 'sides that I don't really trust my self around bread! That food is like "Lay's Potato Chips" I can't eat just one slice! I have come to the conclusion that to return to eating the things that got me to binge would invalidate all of the benefits that I have relised since being on the LC lifestyle.

FTW

Cheers,

Thanks for all the great info. I'll probably stay away from the stuff because I could sit down and eat a whole loaf of bread as a snack. I just love the stuff. It's just the idea of a bagel with some cream cheese on a Saturday morning for a change of pace that is appealing to me.

LOVE this board!!

Interesting thing about LC breads. Even though it's low in carbs, if it has ANY whole wheat in it, it still has a HIGH glycemic impact. So, yes it's best to stay away from it until maintenance and you are firmly established in your WOL.......sorry to say.

This could also send some people into a reeling carb binge.......not good.

Barb, one of the biggest mistakes of my life was going off low-carb back in the 80's and going to a "natural" diet with lots of whole wheat and brown rice and wheat germ. Yeah, sure, that stuff is better for you than white bread, but how much better?

It made my life very difficult. I was gaining, losing, gaining again, losing again, but I couldn't make myself believe that anything that sounded so "natural" and "good" and smelled so nice could possibly be bad for me.

I used to think a lot of stupdi things. There was a theory among some people that the reason people got fat was because they weren't getting all the important vitamins and micronutrients they need from today's fast food, so that's why we eat too much; we are trying to feed our starved bodies. Eat those natural foods and feed your body and you'll lose weight naturally. Right?

It doesn't work. Blech.

Bread has never done anything good for me.

Well, it holds sandwiches together, yeah, that's something good. That's about it.

Good point, Doc. I don't even miss bread at this point anymore. So I probably won't even eat any when I get to maintenance. I am however trying to come up with a lowcarb, homemade bread recipe. Who knows if I will succeed. I never was much of a baker-type anyway.
