Cashews and macadamias are both legal choices after induction. However, cashews have about twice the carbs as an equivalent amount of macadamias.

Pistachio nuts are another good choice, especially if they are in the shell. Lots of work for your snack.

According to the USDA website, here are the nutritional values for some different nuts, per cup, roasted and salted:

ALMONDS - Cals 952, Protein 33g, Total Fat 86g, Carbs 27g, Fiber 16g, Sugars 7 g

BRAZIL NUTS - Cals 918, Protein 20g, Total Fat 93g, Carbs 17g, Fiber 10g, Sugars 3.2

CASHEWS - Cals 749, Protein 21g, Total Fat 61g, Carbs 39g, Fiber 4g, Sugars 6.5g

MACADAMIA NUTS - Cals 959, Protein 10g, Total Fat 101g, Carbs 17g, Fiber 10g, Sugar 5.5g

PEANUTS - Cals 862, Protein 40g, Total Fat 75g, Carbs 22g, Fiber 13g, Sugars 6g

PECANS - Cals 788, Protein 10g, Total Fat 82g, Carbs 14g, Fiber 1og, Sugars 4.3g

PISTACHIOS - Cals 698, Protein 26g, Total Fat 56g, Carbs 33g, Fiber 12.6g, Sugars 9.6g

WALNUTS - Cals 654, Protein 15g, Total Fat 65g, Carbs 14g, Fiber 6.7g, Sugars 2.6g

Most of the fat in nuts is the "good" kind, and they can be a great source of some essential elements like potassium and magnesium. They are also all pretty high in calories, so most of us have to keep an eye on quantities. Dr. Atkins favored macadamias, but they're expensive, and a better source of fat than protein. In my opinion, the lowly peanut has an undeserved bad rap (what difference does it make if it's technically a legume?, and is a great lc snack once you're off induction.

Hope this helps -

My faves are almonds, pistachios, and pecans. I measure out 1/4 cup and put the rest away. That way I don't binge on them. I savor one little nut at a time to make them last longer.

One other added benefit (at least for me) is regularity! Since adding nuts frequently to my food list, constipation is a thing of the past.

BTW, I love weighing the little buggers!

Cheers,

Mike

I would also say it is nice to have something crunchy too. I miss my Toastidos and have found nuts to be a satisfying replacement.

You want something crunchy? Guess what I am eating at this very moment. Pork Rinds. I made some Kefir dip (kinda like sour cream, but better for you) with a tad of dried minced garlic, dill and some season salt. YUUUUUUM!!! And the pork rinds are virtually NO carbs. I wanted something crunchy and salty. Pork rinds fit the bill.

(and I used to HATE pork rinds. )

It sucks that my favorites are cashews which seem to have the highest carbs and lowest fiber!

There are many different size of cups, how do I know which size must I use to measure the nuts. I am not eating nuts now - but I want to know.

Leespike, don't they have MEASURING cups there in Jamaica? 1/4 cup is a measurement increment. It is also 1 ounce if you have access to a small food scale.

Lissette, I still eat 1/4 cup of cashews once in awhile. Not very often, just as a treat. I don't think they would be tooooo aweful for you after induction is over, once in awhile.

They are still way better than a bag of doritoes or a bag of oreo cookies, ya know?

I take a 1/4 cup of nuts with me everyday I work. I half the time I don't eat them but they are there to help me get through all the carbs that my co-workers bring to work to share. If it is bad I just grab my nuts and snack on those. Almonds is usually my choice.

Hi Barb Keith, We use metric but I am not good at using that kind of measurement - feet, inches, ounces are more my style, ok. I appreciate your comments.
