I hope you aren't trying to lose weight while you're pregnant, are you? Yes, you can still low carb to an extent-a maintenance type level while you are pregnant or breastfeeding, but certainly DON'T try losing weight. That said, it's important to get all your vitamins, protein, minerals, calcium, etc in for the little one. Are there ANY veggies you can stomach? Green beans, lettuce, tomato? If you can't do veggies, make sure you are taking a good prenatal vitamin, and add some of the lower GI fruits to your diet-berries, cantaloupe, etc - for vitamins and other goodies. And make sure you get your calcium-cheeses, yogurt, etc.

When I was pregnant with my first, I could not stand ANY veggies but canned spinach! No, I didn't have Popeye-baby!

Kelly, I'm about to enter my 7th month and I know exactly what you mean!
During the first trimester, I couldn't stomach them either.
So, you know what I did?
I bought a bunch of those single serving V-8 cans and I would hold my nose and guzzle down one, twice a day.
I REALLY can't stand V-8, but doing this worked fine and I always had something I *liked* to eat or drink immediately after to get rid of the taste (or I went and brushed my teeth... ).
Anyway, this worked for me. Not ideal, but better than nothing.
I would not, however, drink more than 2 per day and definitely do NOT get the ones with **extra vitamin A,C,& E**. You do NOT want to get too much vitamin A while pregnant. This is why they no longer put it in most prenatal vitamins.

Besides, if you are taking a good prenatal supplement with folic acid, you should be covered.
HTH,

Summer

Congratulations Toodlebug!

I have just recently discovered that I am also pregnant (although only early stages).

I intend to continue to eat a lower carb diet through the pregnancy. I don't have a problem eating veggies (I especially enjoy re-introducing fruits into my diet). My problem is that I have been experiencing morning sickness (all day long!)and I find it hard to stomach the denser, richer, fattier legal low-carb foods! Sometimes I just wish I could eat some dry crackers or toast!

Mum of One - same with me. I'm just finishing my 9th week, and I've already gained 12 pounds in the last 4 weeks (161 to 173), because I couldn't even think of eating eggs for breakfast or chicken for lunch... all I wanted was toast or a bagel or cereal for breakfast, then a sandwich and either chicken soup or beef barley soup for lunch, and pasta with little sauce for dinner. I can't believe how little my body can tolerate the reintroduction of all those carbs. It just goes to show I can't metabolize that much carbs - and I'm on thyroid meds.

the 12 pound gain has been awful. Yesterday, someone asked me when my baby was due. Thank god this time I actually am pregnant, but when I said August, he goes "that's going to be a big baby!" and I thought to myself - he doesn't see my baby, he sees the loaf of bread I ate last week that's stuck in my belly. My back is already getting sore, and I'm feeling numbness in my legs. Emotionally its affecting me big time too - last night I dreamt that my husband was cheating on me because I'm pregnant and getting too fat.

So this week I've decided to go on a maintenance plan, and I'm trying to limit my day to 100g carbs/day and see what happens over a week. If I'm still gaining, I'll drop it by 10, or if I'm losing, I'll add, or if I stay the same, then I know my threshold. Yesterday I did great, but today DH came home with treats from Tim Hortons, so a fritter, danish and muffin later, I'm back to feeling like crap.

Anyways, that's my venting, but I thought I'd share my experience, and let you know you may feel worse for giving in to the carbs... good luck!

LOL, Lawbooks, I was going to suggest the same thing! When I was pregnant, I liked the really bland stuff (toast, mac and cheese, etc) followed with a chaser of V8 - this was especially important because I could not tolerate the prenatal vitamins - and this from the woman who has an iron stomach, I mean NOTHING bothers me.

Niki, the weight gain part of pregnancy is really hard. But, the fact is, it is what it is. Not sure if this will be any comfort, but I had BIG babies (I was very heavy when I got pregnant the first time and gained a bunch the second time) and they were soooo good. My first son was 9 lbs 1 oz and he slept through the night starting at 8 weeks and my second son was 9 lbs 11 oz and he slept throght the night starting at 5 weeks. So, it's not all bad to gain and have a big baby. BTW, it is permissable (when "gravid" as my nutty father would say) to have a hissy fit in DH when he brings home unacceptable food! Good luck to you as you start this fantastic journey (it's NOT the same the second time around - somehow it's not as muc fun to get kicked in the cervix all the time )
