Andrea
Thanks for the heads-up on the survey, consider it done. Give 'em heck in DC!

Took the survey, it would be nice to know when foods are considered 'low carb’ Right now I think Atkins is the only one who gives a seal of approval i am not sure of the checks and balances there.

Thanks for the info! I went to the site and took the survey. It's good to know there is an organization watching out for us!

Andrea,
WELCOME to DC. I hope the conference goes well. I, too, took the survey--great questions. Let us know how the conference goes! I hope you brought your coat and gloves--its freezing this week! Here's a little sunshine to warm you :-)

Andrea~

I'm particularly glad to hear you say that one of your goals for the CarbAware Summit is to help ensure that the low-carb movement doesn't fall down the same dark hole the low-fat industry did. In my opinion, the creation of all these highly-processed, polyol-laden, "low-carb" fake foods only works to shoot "real" low-carbing in the foot. People will substitute the junky fat-making foods they are eating now with junky fat-making foods that claim to be lower in carbs. They won't get the results they are hoping for, so they'll declare that they tried low-carbing and it doesn't work.

I don't mean to sound so negative - I think it's great that low-carbing is becoming more mainstream, but I really fear that the advent of the "low-carb industry" will cause many people to miss the boat entirely when it comes to what this way of eating is REALLY all about.

I took the survey a long time ago.

Personally, I don't expect good results from any of this. Atkins Nutritionals would have too much to lose if some group condemned sugar alcohols. What will probably happen is that they will make some weak and nearly meaningless comment that sugar alcohols are a YMMV thing.

None of this would have been a big debate years ago. The older Atkins books clearly condemn the use of sugar alcohols. But there is just too much gold in them thar candy bars for a leaderless corporation to resist.

This CarbAware ought to be careful about endorsing sugar alcohols. I would be keenly eager to participate in a class action suit against polyol-pushers if and when one gets started. There's fraud involved in this. That's a serious matter.

As the emperor Caligula once said, "But that the world had just one neck, that I could strangle it." But that all the polyol-pushers had just one wallet that we could vaccuum clean.

I realize, some people have eaten low-carb bars and have lost weight anyway. That's good for them. But that doesn't go to the issue of whether or not polyols can sabotage ketosis, which is the basis of most low-carb diets.

Hi Andrea,
Hope you will bring back some news about Ciclamates, used extensively in Europe and in Canada, ciclamates { I hope I am not starting some big contrversy here} are supposedly going to be re-approved by the FDA.
I have brought back some, from Canada and Germany I have used ciclamates in baking with excellent results.
Have fun in Washington
