Today I was buying pork rinds in a brand different from the one I usually buy. I had already rejected the BBQ ones when I saw sugar featured as the second ingredient. Offhandedly, I looked at the ingredients on the bag of plain ones already in my cart--and saw that they had been fried in hydrogenated oil. I certainly never expected to find trans fats in my pork rinds. Just a reminder, read those labels!

Isn't THAT the truth! Garbage shows up where you least expect it!

Not only that, but check your frequently purchased items too - they change their ingredients without letting you know sometimes!

Some for the better, some not....

Good reminder, Aderyn!

Yeah, isn't that weird? Like there's not enough fat in pork skin to fry without adding something?

It's amazing what you start to see when you become an inveterate "label reader."

And Char's right! Don't ever get complacent, since they (fill in the blank re: "they") DO tend to change ingredients without any notice!

Our chosen path is not one which can be followed by coasting.

It's easy to get complacent when you're in a hurry. Yesterday I was running around all daya nd on the way home stopped to buy some low carb bread. If I don't want to pay the 5 or dollars for teh soy based breads I usually buy nature's own brand (5 net carbs). I had heard from a low carb friend that sara lee had a really good bread that was 7 net carbs. So I grab a loaf of this bread on the fly. This morning i toasted one slice and on first bite I taste sugar. In fact when I used to make my owm bagels tehy had that same type of sweetness. Barley malt syrup.
Okay so now (too late) I read the label. It has barley malt flour right near the beginning of the ingredient list. It has High fructose corn syrup a little further on. HFCS was found to raise triglyceride levels in men by about 32% in a 6 week study. It had no effect on women.
It has honey. And the very last ingedient out of 40 others - sucralose. What is that one grain per loaf? Sorry to rant but this bread is totally unacceptable to me. Will have to give it away.

Rob, I am so glad to read this post. Someone told me about this "wonderful" Sara Lee bread, and I actually have coupons cut out to try some. I'd have gotten caught in the same trap. By the way, I like the Nature's Own brand, too.

Good advice to keep checking labels even when you think you "know" a product. I had one turn out for the good the other day...Dean's brand cottage cheese in the low-fat version has precisely the same nutrition information (except for the saturated fat and calories) as the regular. Same carb count, same sugar, same everything except lower sat fat. I could have sworn the low-fat version of this brand (as with most?) had higher carbs and sugar than the regular, but nope - it's all good!

P.S. I'm in maintenance and I eat a lot of cottage cheese, so I'd just as soon save the fat & calories...this may not be a concern for others.
