| I've rarely seen such a carelessly woven mix of fact and myth, to get to the conclusion the writer was obviously seeking. Maggie 5'1" ~~ Atkins since '98 (160+) Maintaining nicely (110 +/-) ~~ Redhead until further notice! |

|
quote:
"When low-carb diets work, they do so because they limit caloric intake," says Richard Cohen, the dietitian who directs Greene Memorial Hospital's HMR Weight Management Program.

For the record, I am a "graduate" of the HMR Weight Management Program (essentially a protein-sparing modified fast). When I started the maintenance phase, the first thing they had me eat was potatoes. Potatoes of any kind, as long as they were served plain, i.e., no butter, sour cream, mashed, etc. Knowing what I know now about the glycemic index, I shudder. Also for the record, within a few years I had regained all of the lost weight and about 20 pounds more. Great maintenance program, hey? Aderyn |

|
quote:
Eating less fat helps anyone lose weight. Dietary fats convert to body fat more completely than carbohydrates or proteins and have nine calories per gram, compared with four each for carbs and protein.

Soooo not true. A lot of us have gained weight eating less fat. I know I have. And that part about fat has 9 calories and everything else has 4... SO WHAT?? It's like the argument over what weighs more, a pound of feathers or a pound of lead. There are actually people that will argue with you until they're blue in the face that a pound of lead weighs more. An interesting thing that I think about sometimes... Do you realize how rare it is to find substantial numbers of carbs and fat in the same food? It just doesn't happen. There are fatty things, there are carby things, but there aren't very many fatty and carby things in nature. We've invented this, on our own. There is nothing in the natural world like a donut. ************** "Sometimes I think you have to march right in and demand your rights, even if you don't know what your rights are, or who the person is you're talking to. Then on the way out, slam the door." |

| I gained from 129 to 184 on a low fat diet. I was sick and tired all the time. I'm down to 167, feel great, and I'm eating FAT! I don't care about the calories anymore, just my health and lf didn't help out at all. Lc is. 171.5/167/117-122 |
