Greetings all, First, I have lurked and benefited a TON from this group. Now I have a question: I am going to Europe for three weeks on a tour which will include most breakfasts and some dinners. For dinners my DH and I will either make do with what they serve (assuming they have entrees and veggies we can eat) or (more probably) break away from the group and do our own (Atkins)thing. However, the breakfast is more "captive." Can anyone suggest how to handle a continental breakfast when a)you have no independent transportation and are captive to your locations, and b)you have no access to grocery stores where you could have otherwise stocked up, and c)they look at you and say, "Low carb? Huh??" Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I've come a long way and don't want to be derailed, but also want something to eat for three weeks. Alex

Since I spent 7 days in London just recently. The european (not london) continential breakfast is generally meat and cheeses with yogurt. The yogurt is favored and high in carbs. But the meat and cheese is fine. Bread is available but just skip it. What I do when I go on vacation is take some of the LC drinks with me. Atkins are a little heavy because they come in a can but are good. Try EAS carb control they come in fruit drinks style boxes. I would take 10-12 with me putting 8-10 in my bag and 2 in my carry on. (you can take more if you want). As you drink them you will have room to take things home with you. I got use to them not being cold and it helped me get started with a good breakfast when I needed it. I personally like the strawberry flavor best. Oh I bring along a bag of veggies (a little dip) for the flight that way you won't snack on the high salt and carbs they feed you. Hope this helps, travellost-51 yrs Young 1/20/03 195/145 first time 1/5/04 second time 150/147.5/135 "I am allergic to carbs they make me break out in fat"

Which countries will you be in? There's a big difference in what is offered depending on where you are. The buffets of Germany, Hungary and Holland in my experience will have cold cuts, fruits, bacon, eggs, cheese, etc. Italy and France, on the other hand, aren't huge on breakfast It's bread/croissant and yogurt or a tiny piece of cheese and really strong coffee. I'd stock up the day before in countries with skimpy am provisions, maybe take a collapsable cloth ice chest (but ice is always an issue, too.) There's always a stick of salami and some cheese with maybe sliced cucumber and tomatoes to tide you over till lunch or sugar free peanut butter in celery. Maybe nuts for snacks.

In France, Begium, and Switzerland a continental breakfast usually will include cheeses and soft boiled eggs at the very least. If you plan on using peanut butter, take it with you. It's unlikely you'll find any in Europe and what you do find will not be sugar free. LCE member since March 2002

| I don't count on getting low carb anytime I travel. If there is a low carb choice, great, but I always pack raw almonds and/or walnuts and individual packaged beef jerky sticks. Also, low carb protein bars are not good on a regular basis for losing but they can help keep you on track during a trip where getting food may be difficult.
