First of all, I know drinking is not good while on Atkins.

This weekend I had a few drinks, my sisters bday party I had 2 drinks (vodka and cranberry w/ selzer), and friday nite I had 2 shots of tequila (patron) with a diet coke. Saturday morning I woke up with a monster of a headache and felt like a truck hit me, mind you, I am not a lightweight drinker, but OMG, this was like a hangover from my teenage years, for the rest of the day I could barely drink water, and then last nite, I had another few at my sisters bday party, this morning I woke up and felt like I was on my death bed, I have not had ANY cheats since the 2nd week of January. I tried to drink some water and within 20 mins, it came right back up, I couldn't hold anything down, I had to get something substantial in my stomach, my body actually felt like it was breaking down, I was shaking and my head was pounding. So I forced down a blueberry muffin and a cup of coffee (for the headache), because the motrin I took earlier did nothing for my headache/hangover? Now that I ate the muffin (the only cheat I've had in over a month), I feel ok. I still feel sorta weak, like I wouldn't attempt a long walk, or a hike today, but what gives?

Did my body break down because of the alcohol and HAD to have carbs???

Has anyone else ever experienced this?

So what else did you eat or drink besides the alcohol. If you don't have enough food in your system then the alcohol will strongly affect you. I am a wimpy drinker so it doesn't seem to matter wether I do LC or not. I have very low tolerance.

Hang over effect everyone differently. The idea of having sugar and flour carbs was probably to settle your stomach. But according to what I read fat would be better for the headache but it takes longer. But I bet most people couldn't get that past their stomachs. A LC drink might have done the exact same thing without all the carbs. Or even just a piece of rye toast if you needed the flour to settle you stomach.

So I hope this is behind you and you just start back up. But if it happens again try something different like a shake or even a LC bar (they are not good for me) and see if it does the trick.

Watch out for cranberry juice it is generally very high in sugar.

Merdiva,
I'm not going to preach or lecture () -- sounds like you have suffered enough () -- but you should be warned that **for whatever reason** this woe seems to make us more susceptible to the effects of alcohol.
I'm sure there is a perfectly reasonable scientific explanation... but MANY people have commented about getting tipsy faster after following this woe for awhile. So now you know and can avoid such mistakes in the future.

As for how you handled the post-intoxication pain and suffering (), you actually did the two WORST things you could possibly do and probably prolonged your misery.
First of all, the whole point of a hangover is that you become extremely dehydrated after drinking like that and water really IS the best **cure**. By avoiding the water and going for the coffee, you did your body a *double whammy* as coffee is a diuretic and probably served to make you even more dehydrated.
Next time, if you are craving *carbs* and can't handle eating much else, I would opt for some fruit and SLOWLY sip water throughout the day (in tiny amounts at a time!).
That is, if there IS a next time...

Summer
