I have a question. I have been dieting and regaining weight for years--and have lost and regained probably hundreds, maybe thousands of pounds. Right now I am at 198--I've lost 19 pounds on Atkins and have a goal of 51 more. I KNOW I can do it--I have a g reat support system (husband & friend) doing it with me though they have lots less to lose..I am exercising--which I know is key for me and I have motivation (a bet and a 20th yr class reunion) but somehow in the back of my mind I hear very discouraging m ental messages such as "you are excited about hitting 198 lbs but you should never have let yourself get this heavy in the first place" and "you know if this goes well something else in life will fall apart" and so on. In other words, useless garbage that is very discouraging. I think I need to get past some of those messages in my head to finally be successful long-term. Can anyone recommend a book that maybe deals with some of those issues? I would appreciate it. ô

What To Say When You Talk To Yourself by Shad Helmstetter

It'll help you get rid of those negative voices in your head.

Here's a link to the book at Amazon.com

Check out Geneen Roth's books. They've helped me through many rough times. Good luck...I know how hard it is to put weight in perspective.

I don't know any good books for you, just try to keep thinking "new beginnings", I've done the same thing for years,and have no Idea how I let myself go this far, and I keep messing up, but I also keep trying, and sooner or later I WILL get it right and so will you, but it will be one day at a time, and with a little help from our friends. Keep posting and reading, It really helps!!{{{hugs}}}

Here's another good one on self-talk and changing your thinking.

You Can Heal Your Life

I find when I slip off course, Loi Ann, it's usually because I've fallen back into negative self-talk. But as Louise Hay would say "It's only a thought, and a thought can be changed."

Here's an article from this very website that would be good for you to read: This is NOT a Hair Commercial

As Dr. Phil says, "You have to change those negative tapes in your head." Maybe taping signs around the house that say things like, "I'm worth it." "I deserve to lose weight." "My family deserves the best of me." things like that, will help you affirm those positive tapes you want to switch to.

Hi, Lori Ann.

I know this isn't cutting edge stuff, but those "messages" are often best understood as "scripts" we internalized and incorporated (without much introspection) into our personalities.

Transactional analysis is hardly the latest "hot topic" but you might get a great insight from looking at things from this perspective.

"I'm OK, You're OK" by Thomas Harris and "Games People Play" by Eric Berne are still available in paperback on Amazon.com.

Helped me a lot, many years ago, when I needed to figure out a few things about myself.

HTH.
