You'll want to be sure to watch Dateline on NBC tomorrow night (2/20).

I got this email from Josh Mankiewicz:
quote:
We'll be on tomorrow night for the whole hour. I only have one of the six segments so I'm not sure exactly what the other stories are...but mine is an interview w/ Gary Taubes about how we all were on low-fat diets and got fat, and we interview a dietitian who is clearly more comfortable with people losing weight on low carb diets than she used to be.

Hope you and the gang let me know what you think.

    Josh

Josh is a fellow low carber. You may have seen the Dateline interview that he did with the bread lobbyist a few weeks ago.

Good to know, I will be sure to watch. Gary Taubes wrote a great article in Science (March 30th 2001 2436-41) "The Soft Science of Dietary Fat". It is non technical and defenitely worth looking up.

    Josh did a great job!
That dietician who talked about seeing the fat dripping from his chin while he was in hog heaven has changed her tune!!
Here are the links to the transcripts:

Did Uncle Sam get it wrong, and Dr. Atkins get it right? by Josh Mankiewicz

    Other sections:

Wife of famous diet doctor fights critics' claims

Medical experts weigh in with first scientific findings

There was also a section on true carb counts in some of the new low carb foods, but I haven't seen a transcript for that one yet.

If you'd like to email Josh about his report, you can contact him at Josh.Mankiewicz@nbc.com

It was very informative and I hope people watching pulled out all the positives of our WOE, but my only gripe is why does every tv show or article only focus on "all the meat and cheese you can eat"? They rarely mention all of the vegatables that we eat and if they did, I think people would see how healthy it really is.

Here's what I posted in the Newbies thread about this:

quote:
COOL!!! I will certainly send Josh an e-mail. I thought it was, for the most part, very fair. I still didn't see too many vegatables. But I was glad to have them talk about the short term studies that have been done that are showing positive results. I know the jury is still out on the long term effects, but how can you disparage this WOL when cholesterol levels improve. I have improved my blood pressure, MYSELF, without medications. I would like to see an even more in depth program about it. I'm glad they gave Veronica Atkins some air time and showed the LAST interview with the good doctor. I'm glad they were able to dispel some of the hooplah over his weight when he died. I don't know how many people "got it" though. I'm also glad they did the bit on the carb counts of many LC convenience foods. Buyer beware. Overall, I thought it was a good report. I don't think they gave Gary Taubes enough air time, though. It was good to see Josh's report witht he dietician. I think she's not entirely on the bandwagon though. She still buys into the Big Fat Lie.

I was a little upset by some of the findings. Certain Blimpies low carb subs tested at their advertised carb counts. But at one Blimpies they tested the low carb subs at 45 carb grams or so. This means that unscrupulous owners are probably using regular bread rather than the low carb bread because the regular bread is cheaper. Or perhaps we should give them the benefit of the doubt and call it a mistake. Yeah Right.
There was one item, Darielle pasta, that I've used that tested at 18 net carbs when it says 9 or 10 on the label.

I agree with Rob. I, too, was disconcerted with the lab testing of the low carb products.

I agreed with the man in the lab who stated that the consumer is really at the mercy of the makers of these low carb products because we really do not know for sure what the carb counts are (not a direct quote). John and I surmised that the idiot behind the counter at Blimpies probably used real bread instead of low carb bread. Since it was evident that he couldn't speak English and just grunted and pointed at the "low carb" sign on the wall when the consumer inquired about low carb sandwiches, he most likely didn't have a clue about what he was doing (supposition on my part...don't climb my frame for that comment, people).

I also didn't like the fact that the same images were flashed over and over again of people frying sausage, bacon, and eggs in 3 inches of liquid fat. I've never, ever done that. Also, the constant flashing of images of thick slabs of cooked meat being eaten sans vegetables made me wince. I kept saying aloud: "Where are the vegetables?" These kinds of portrayals help propagate the misconception that low carb equates a meat-cheese-and-egg diet.

Yet, overall I was satisfied with the segment because of the studies that were done which substantiated the "theory" that low carb versus low fat is better for a body, if only for the short term (as was stated). I'm quite sure that the long term will prove just as positive given time. The overall weight loss and blood work of low carbers was significantly better than those following a low fat regimen, it was stated that way on national TV, and for that, I breathed a sigh of relief.

When Josh brought out those e-mails and mentioned that he had found a "whole low carb community" out there, I held my breath, hoping that he would say something about this site and Andrea, but he didn't, dang it.

Please send your comments to Josh or to Dateline@NBC.com

The true carb count segment was very interesting. I'm really glad now that I've stayed away from most of that stuff. I'm also very, very glad that the Atkins brands tested true to label.
