It just ocurred to me that maybe I am eating too many. Maybe 2 oz a day. I am not quite losing a lb a week (I was hoping for at least 1.5 pounds) and maybe this is why. thanks for helping! Easter challenge 226/224/211 Began 1/12/04 245/224/150???

My rule is a handful of whichever nuts i want. My favorites are cashews, but almonds are by far a better choice. Started 3/20/03 thru 9/2003 Restarted 1/2/04, this time i will finish what i started. 180-154-140 http://img24.photobucket.com/albums/...rofile_pic.jpg

1 oz would be better! I try to limit myself to only about 28 nuts a day--sometimes I eat a few more than that--but never over 2oz. I also have a handful of sunflower seeds now and then, but I eat them in the shell so I never get a full serving of them.

It's best to avoid peanuts and cashews, they aren't really nuts. They are legumes and quite a bit higher in carbs than other nuts and seeds. DANDR recommends that you limit nuts to 1 ounce per day or less if your weight loss stalls. Here's what equals 1 ounce or 5 carbs: macadamias (approximately 10 to 12 nuts) walnuts (approximately 14 halves) almonds (approximately 14 nuts) pecans (approximately 14 halves) hulled sunflower or pumpkin seeds (3 tablespoons or 1/4 cup) roasted shelled peanuts (approximately 26 nuts) cashews should be limited to only 1/2 ounce (approximately 9 nuts) LCE member since March 2002

Brightlady, Thanks for the specifics....I read 28 (24) almonds equal an ounce somewhere. Now it all makes sense. But the one thing I am confused about is when you go to fitday it states that 1 oz is 2 carbs for almonds, but DANDR says 5 carbs. Am I counting everything wrong? No wonder I am losing so slowly. Just when I think I have got everything under control, I get confused all over again! Amy Easter challenge 226/224/211 Began 1/12/04 245/224/150???

| Amy, I'm with you. Those 5 gm counts must be total carbs, not net carbs. According to the USDA all those servings listed in Bright's post are more like 1-3 net carbs apiece. I know that DANDR gives a much higher carb count for nuts than I can find anywhere else - USDA or Bowes & Church - wherever. I'm not sure why. | I must have "skinny" almonds--I weighed mine and between 22-28 was an ounce! I don't like macadamia nuts or walnuts and am allergic to cashews so I dont have that one to worry about. |
