| There was some discussion a few threads back about cholesterol. You'll find that thread here. Then, scroll down and read what Dr. I says.
quote:
There are major studies by peer-reviewed publications like the New England Journal of Medicine that have shown that Atkins dieters improve their blood lipids.

Perhaps you could do an online search and find those reviews, or visit your local library where you'll find medical journals. Hope this helps... April 352/209/180 Down 143 pounds 29 to go... http://www.geocities.com/aprilwyatt/beforeandafter |

| There is the "classic" New England Journal of Medicine article with the following abstract:A Randomized Trial of a Low-Carbohydrate Diet for Obesity that showed no change in LDL (bad cholesterol; think L=lethal) but an increase in HDL (good cholesterol; H=healthy). Those nemonics help me to remember which is which.
quote:
After three months, no significant differences were found between the groups in total or low-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations. The increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations and the decrease in triglyceride concentrations were greater among subjects on the low-carbohydrate diet than among those on the conventional diet throughout most of the study.

There is one from the American Journal of Medicine (which I have not read yet). The article Effect of 6-month adherence to a very low carbohydrate diet program that says:
quote:
Serum total cholesterol level decreased 11 ± 26 mg/dL (P = 0.006), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol level decreased 10 ± 25 mg/dL (P = 0.01), triglyceride level decreased 56 ± 45 mg/dL (P <0.001), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol level increased 10 ± 8 mg/dL (P <0.001), and the cholesterol/HDL cholesterol ratio decreased 0.9 ± 0.6 units (P <0.001).

Effects of a Very-Low-Carbohydrate Diet with Nutritional Supplementation in Overweight Individuals
quote:
After 16 weeks, there were significant changes in mean total cholesterol of 11.8 mg/dl (p = 0.03), triglycerides of 52.1 mg/dl (p < 0.001), HDL of +4.7 mg/dl (p = 0.006) and total cholesterol/HDL ratio of 0.7 (p < 0.001). There was no statistically significant change in mean LDL.

If you want the original, you could probably find it at a University library and just make a photocopy of it. Most universities won't mind if someone comes in to look up a few articles. Ask a librarian for help if you need it. Your other option would be to buy a pdf copy over the net with a credit card. I don't konw how much these journals charge, but I have heard other journals ask for anything from $10-$50 per article. That is all I can find right now. If you want to find more, look through Low Carb Research. Started Atkins on 9/20/03 235-->185; 150 goal [This message was edited by paladin on 02-27-04 at 12:52 PM.] |
