| Somewhere over the course of the last few days I remember reading a post about it being possible to drink too much water. I am ALWAYS thirsty. It is just 2pm now and I have already had 3 liters (99 oz) of water. I will probably drink at least that much more before I go to bed. Is it really possible to have too much? Thanks for your input. | This is NOT medical advice, and I am not qualified to give medical advice. It is possible. The only incidents I've heard of where people have gotten ill have been during marathons or other endurance events. It's called hyponatremia, which means "low salt." I don't think you're going to be at risk with the amount you're drinking, but that is a layman's opinion. I encourage you to consult your doctor, as constant thirst can be a sign of diabetes. That said, I have found that when I increased the amount of water I drank, I wanted even more, and I am not diabetic or pre-diabetic. | WHO ON EARTH said it was *impossible* to drink too much water??? That is ABSOLUTELY NOT TRUE! I am one of the *nagging proponents* of adequate water intake on this board, but you will never hear me say this! Water toxicity most commonly occurs in extreme situations... such as soldiers marching in a desert, drinking too much water and not replacing the lost salt. Or in infants who are given water (their bodies are not equipped to handle much water until they are several months old). Or an *extreme athelete* (like a marathon runner) drinking water too quickly without replacing the lost sodium from their bodies... It can and it DOES happen. It's just not very common. I, personally, go by the rule of drinking at LEAST 1/2 your body weight in ounces per day (NO LESS), but not going over 128-150 oz./day unless you are exercising (and sweating) regularly. Even then, you need to make sure you are not cutting salt completely from your diet. Hope this helps! Summer www.herstorygirl.com |

Lanny, (and this is my NON-medical, totally-off-the-record-opinion!) since you are doing sea salt, you are likely at VERY little risk for water toxicity. And I drink NO LESS than a gallon a day. Today looks like it will end up being about a gallon and a half.

Water intoxication won't come from spreading the water consumption out throughout the day - it comes from consuming an inordinate amount in a short time-frame, like a gallon in 30 minutes. I remember one of my docs talking about a patient doing just that and becoming "drunk" on it - she did it intentionally - DUH!! Not too bright, I'd have to say.... So 100 ounces or more over the course of a day is not likely to cause you harm. And like the others have stated... I am not a physician and this is not to be construed as medical advice! End of disclaimer! Char Being "over the hill" is much better than being under it....

I recently found out that it could be dangerous for me to consume too much water at one time. I have a condition that affects the electrolytes, and my heart could get out of rhythm if I drink too much at one time. I do drink a lot of water, but it's during the course of the day, and not all at once.

I work in longterm healthcare both with older adults and psychiatric/medical injuries that require 24/7 care. It is possible to drink too much water in the fact also that you will "flood" your body and wash out medicines, vitamins, minerals before they are absorbed if drinking too much in a specific time frame of their absorbtion rate into your system. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Atkins as of 1/9/04 340/320/145 (someday I'll see it!!!) 80 sticks of butter GONE and I'm not looking for them!!
