I was wondering if it is o.k. to take water pills. I know that Dr. Atkins advised staying away from all medications except for vitamins and such. However, I am retaining a lot of fluid today. I ate a lot of salt over the weekend plus it is that tom. I feel very bloated and yucky. I drank my gallon of water today, but still feel bloated.

Good luck all!!

Seesko,
Water pills are nothing more then caffiene. Read the ingredients. If you can handle taking all that caffiene, then go ahead. I have taken them before I was on Atkins, and they did help some, but it tells you to take lots of water with it. We know water flushes water, so I would say just up your water intake since caffiene may stall you.

In his book, DANDR, Dr Atkins recommends for fluid retention:

quote:
50 to 100mg of pyridoxal 5 phosphate, plus 1500 to 3000 mg taurine daily. asparagus tablets are also effective.

Seesko, do you have prescription fluid pills or are you using OTC (over the counter) ones?

Take care~

They are over the counter. I didn't take them last night and I am still yucky this morning. I used to have to take them monthy, but really haven't had as big of a problem since this woe. However, this time I am having problems. I am trying to do without them. I am drinking my water like a mad women. I guess I will just wait it out.

Terra, I really have to watch my sodium counts. I have to limit cheese, processed deli meats and bacon, some diet sodas have sodium, pork rinds, etc. It's a bummer, but a fact for me.

This link makes for interesting reading.

Take care~

I actually read this and bought the salt. However, I still haven't started it. I guess I will have to give it a shot. Thanks Kumus!

Seesko,

Just a reminder that exercise can really get the fluids moving, too. A long walk could do wonders, or even just some stretching can help sorta "squeeze" the excess fluids out.

This way of eating tends to be diuretic in and of itself, so taking prescription or over-the-counter "water pills" can be risky, in that it can lead to an electrolyte imbalance. You are wise to try to get things moving by drinking water, eating lots of veggies, and recognizing that fluid retention does tend to be cyclical.

One other thing to keep in mind is that there is often a "delay factor" involved when we eat a lot of salt or eat something off-plan. Sometimes the effects don't show up until days after the "offense", making it hard to pinpoint the problem.

Hope the damn dam breaks soon!
