I ate some spaghetti tonight (cringe).

I called myself just sampling it to check for al-dente (bad spelling?) and I ended up eating about 1/4 cup of it.

I also ate 2, yes 2 low carb bars. But now they are all gone and I won't be buying any more.

The rest of what I ate was alright.

Question: Are the low carb frozen desserts alright? Like Atkins Endulge or LeCarb bars or ice cream? And what about the sugar free Reese cups and treats like that? Bread I'm ok with doing without, no problem, but sweets... especially chocolate, now that's another story!

It depends if you are still in induction....

If you are in OWL then it is OK to have low carb products, but in moderation. You need to tread slowly and see if they stall you.

And if you crave choclate, try the "legal" three minute chocolate cake. You can find it in the low carb cooking section of the forum under MOCK DANISH YOU HAVE MET YOUR MATCH.

Also, there is lc pasta, but I have never tried it yet.

Anyway...smiles....and get right back on the horse girl...smiles

It's important to read the labels. If it used splenda or an artifical sweetener it will probably be alright to have some in moderation.
But if you are craving sweets..you are better off not eating any artifical sweetener foods.

Hi: It's the sweet taste that is the problem, not the sweets themselves. That's why we recommend no sweets. Of course, I am one of the first to fly off the WOL at the smell of chocolate!

Try not eating ANYTHING sweet for a while. You may find your taste for it changing.

Peace, Peg

Nope, not in induction.
Yep, I think the frozen stuff is made with Splenda, but not sure, I don't have any right now.

I have some low-carb pasta in my cabinet right now and I'm not liking it very much. I'm not really a big pasta eater, I just over "sampled )

going now to check out that choclate cake you mentioned. (I have eaten the mock danish many times, it's quite yummy, especially with a little sugar free davinci syrup, which I'm out of, as it were.)

I love LC ice cream, but I have not had any for over a week. During that time, I noticed that my weight loss began to accelerate.

Try them if you must, but be very careful with them.

Nothing sweet for a while???? NOTHING CHOCOLATE?!?!

You're couragous, very couragous.

I don't know if I could be... gotta have my chocolate fix, at least 3 times a week. But then again, I'm willing to try nearly anything to be thin!

EXcept for a couple of chocolate cakes--most of both I dumped out before we ate them--I haven't had any chocolate in 8 weeks!!! The cakes have been in the last 3 weeks too. I don't miss it--I have replaced sweet with veggies and fruits and am doing better for it!

I really don't WANT to do without chocolate, I love it, it's one of my favorite things

I read through some of the chocolate recipes and they reminded me of something I used to make about 2 years ago when low-carbing (lost 45 lbs! then: had started at 242 and got to 197!)

I called it chocolate fluff or chocolate cheesecake fluff if you put cream cheese in it. Basically I just whipped up cream, splenda, and cocoa (and cream cheese) until it was like pudding. It was really good, (but so high in calories!) I would also use davinci syrups or other flavorings instead of the cocoa when I wanted a lemony or fruity fluff.

Anck, have you decided on which plan you want to follow? If so, have you read a book about it or done any research concerning what is and what is not an approved food list right off the bat?

I think I can safely assume that pre-fabricated chocolate foods/bars/concoctions in whatever form are not on an approved list for low carb eating in the beginning stages. And, in my humble opinion and from my experience, they should never be eaten by a serious low carber until WELL into the way of life.

I understand sweet cravings and especially chocolate cravings, but the low carb products are full of chemicals and sugar alcohols and it's been my experience that they cause not only a weight stall, but severe gains of weight.

That's counterproductive, so I've learned NOT to eat the low carb sweet products.

Believe me when I say that the sugar/sweet cravings will subside if you but give them a chance to. If you are simply substituting a low carb version of sweet foods for the real, carby foodstuff, what have you gained?

This way of life DOES involve lots of discipline and really defines ones character and sheer determination. You can do this.

Please post a typical days' menu, tell us what plan you're following, and how long you've been at this.

Can't wait to hear back from you....

PS: I see that you were posting at the same time I was posting! LOL. I see that you're eating your own recipe of real chocolate made with Splenda and cream cheese. It's great, isn't it??? I found out a few weeks ago how to make that and it really gives me my chocolate fix!

I'm doing Atkins, began on Jan 4th. I did Atkins back in 2002 (about April to October) for about 6 months or so and lost 45 lbs. I went from 242 lbs. to 197 lbs. (this was the first time I had been under 200 in 10 years!) but I grew weak, not to mention it was around the holidays and I basically went off for about a year and a half and gained back 24 lbs. I was becoming depressed over it (very, medically speaking), so I decided to do something about it...

I will be 40 years old in 2005, so my goal is to be at least 135 lbs by my 40th birthday in March, 2005. It's kindof like a do it or give it up ultimatum I've presented myself with. I'm going through a midlife crisis as well beginning to feel old, fat, etc. I'm all out for a major change in my attitude, self-esteem and appearance.

Oh yeah, typical day's menu:

Keep in mind that I didn't realize the low carb bars should be avoided, but now I do and I have boiled up a bunch of eggs for breakfasts and snacks.

Breakfast: a low carb bar, 2 mugs of coffee with 2 packets of Splenda and 1 tbsp. cream in each.

Lunch: salad of lettuce, cheese, pepperoni, celery, ranch dressing OR tuna from the pouch with mayo or salsa (pace) or a leftover hamburger patty, or I'd skip lunch

Supper: I often skipped supper if I had eaten lunch, but not always. Supper would be a hamburger patty with a slice of onion and mayo, or some other meat (pork, chicken, etc.) veggies include broccoli, cabbage, green beans, salad.

Snacks: low carb frozen bar (chocolate!) or another low carb bar like I'd eaten for breakfast

Drinks: water, diet coke, tea, coffee (a variety of all, all day)

I also take a round of vitamins and minerals:
Atkins Dieter's Advantage tablets (I take two tablets once per day) a mulitvitamin, CoQ10, Calcium, Potassium, L-Glutamine, Vit. E, Vit. C, Chromium, (and an anti-depressant twice daily.)

Menu for 3-2-04

Breakfast: about 1/3 cup of leftover chocolate fluff, coffee with 1 tbsp cream and 2 packets Splenda

Lunch: beef jerky (entire bag had 4 carbs) and pork skins, diet coke

Snack: the rest of the leftover chocolate fluff and another cup of coffee with same C/S

Supper: pizza salad... pepperoni, moz. cheese, parmesan cheese, and pureéd tomatoes on top of a large bed of lettuce. diet coke

Snack: cup of coffee with C/Splenda

I drank a lot of diet coke yesterday, and not much water (I hate to admit that, cause I know better)

A critique of your menu, if you don't mind:

Beef jerkey and pork rinds do not make a nutritional lunch. The jerkey is full of sodium and probably sugar. You'd be better off eating pure protein such as grilled chicken, hamburger patties, pork chops, or even a can of tuna or chicken mixed with real mayo. Where are your vegetables? You had none at lunch. Your carbs should be coming from vegetables and not snack foods such as jerkey and pork rinds.

Supper. Hmm.....again, where are your vegetables? Where's your pure protein? Pepperoni, again, is loaded with sodium and is considered a snack food, to be eaten in moderation.

At this stage of the game, it is advisable to be eating at least 3 cups of vegetables per day, and make sure that the protein you eat is niether pre-packaged or processed. Buy it raw and cook it yourself.

If you're losing fine eating the way you are, however, just ignore me. But even if you are, it's my humble opinion that a day of eating such as you described has no nutritional advantages.

I have found that it is safer to make my own lc treats instead of buying them. That way you know exactly what is in them. Try getting a cookbook (Sharrons is great as is Dana Carpenters). You could also of course look online for some recipes. This site has some great ones. Those valentines day almond cadies of Sharrons is to die for.

Good luck all!!
