Not sure if this is where I should post this so hope this is ok.

I have been reading Diane Schwarzbeins website and this really seem like something I need to get involved in. I cant get out and get her books until late next week but I would like to hear from people that have been following her practices. Can you tell me what following her advice/program has done for you say with or without another low carb plan or what it has done for your body in general? Can you provide me with how you knew that you were insulin resistant without being diabetic? Did you get tested or just knew?

I am still not sure if I am asking the right questions here so ANY help from anyone who has read her books and have found results please chime in!

Thanks so much!....oh and if I put this in the wrong place please help me put this where it will get more attention.

Blessings,

Carol

Carol,

I have read both of her books and they, literally, changed my life. They are the reason why I will eat this way FOR LIFE. What she says in them -- backed up by her own research as an endocrinologist -- just makes so much sense!

I have pretty much been following her guidelines throughout this entire pregnancy. I needed to keep my carbs really low to keep my blood sugar down (I have type II diabetes and this pregnancy tried to send them soaring), but I did NOT want to go into ketosis while pregnant.

I had always *suspected* that I was insulin-resistant (very slow metabolism), but I found out *for sure* about 5 years ago when I went to a pro-LC doctor and had a full workup. This was about 2.5 years before I became a full-blown diabetic, but already, my numbers showed severe insulin resistance. The doctor was baffled (his words) as to how I wasn't already diabetic.

I REALLY believe in Schwarzbein's theories and methods for living LC, but you should know that it is NOT a *fast weight loss* plan. I think that is the only reason why I have not stayed with it for most of my LC journey.
While my *head* knows that she is right -- that adrenal healing and righting our insulin-resistance is more important -- I just found it to be too slow. I was desperate to get the weight off.
That said, even on Atkins I stalled out after 50 pounds lost, so maybe my body is determined to heal at it's own pace anyway.

I think hers is a plan that you can adopt for LIFE and feel really good about. I wish I lived in California so that I could actually visit her clinic! But for now, I am content to use her research to support my LC lifestyle and management of my diabetes.
BTW, it was because of her second book, "The Transition" that I was able to get off of thyroid replacement hormone after 9 years!

Read her books; you will be AMAZED by what she has to say!
HTH,

Summer

Summer thanks so much for your insight.

I feel my metabolism is quite slow here also. Has been for 10 years now. I believe I confirmed it while reading her website(and other readings) on what can cause a slowed metabolism. Steriods. I had to be put on those and loads of antibiotics, allergy drugs and inhalers for about 5 years until I stopped most of them after reading how they can make you gain weight. I had classic signs of steriod and medication sensitivity. I had the swollen face and body to prove it yet my docs thought I was a nut case. They laughed at me when I wanted to do more natural things and yes, I self medicated. I only did this because even our best docs here do nothing but put you on a pill. I wish I could find a low carb doc that would back me up on stuff or just a doc that cares enough to listen to the patient and help. I could get tested on her site IF I had $225 to spend AND I didnt live in NY. For some reason NYers cant do this testing with her. I really dont understand that. I just like the fact that she seems to have so much to offer ppl who are having weight problems that contribute to their health problems too.

From reading her site I see that it will take some time in getting your body back to a healthy state. I see that she talks about it taking her I think 7 years? Or maybe that was a testimony. I just want my health back ya know? I too am desperite to get my weight off. Its been a long road here.

Congrats on being able to get off the thyroid meds and keeping your insulin in check. WOW is that a testimony! I have read in other threads that your almost due with the baby. Congrats on that also. I wish you good health and an easy labor. Thanks for having a great website also!

Blessings,

Carol

Last year, a friend gave me this book and I started to read it while I was on vacation, it was like everything finally made sense to me, I finally understood my own body and why I was fat.

As soon as I started this WOE, I have lost weight and have never felt healthier

I just bought the second book--that's what the store had. Will it be helpful on its own?

While I like the second book very much, I STRONGLY recommend you all get and read the first book as well.
IMHO, the second book will make MUCH more sense if you have read the first one.
Plus, the first one is the one that really convinced me to eat this way for life. The second book focuses more on HOW to follow her plan correctly.
Then again, it *was* the second book that got me off the Synthroid.

Oh, they're both awesome. You won't be sorry you bought/read either!
HTH,
Summer

PS: Thanks, Carol! I'm due in ~4 weeks...

Ditto Summer's comments.

It was after reading her first book in the summer of 2001 that I KNEW I'd be eating lc for life. It is amazing how you suddenly understand how the body works and why you get fat.

I highly recommend the first book first, then the second but, like Summer said, either way you'll get great info!
