Hello everyone,

It's been a while since I posted. Hope everyone is well. I have a question about MALITOL. I am an Atkins follower and I believe that when I read the book, malitol was one of the sweetners that should be avoided because of carb content. Is this true? I really would like to know because Russell Stovers has come out with a line of "low carb" candy. But, upon reading the label I notice that the candy contains a huge amount of Malitol, something like 26g.

Also are sugar alcohols counted as carbs? I've notice that a lot of companies are jumping on the band wagon with so-called low carb products.

Concerning sugar alcohols, I would start by reading this great article by our webmistress, Andrea.

Concerning malitol specifically, it is notorious for creating bloating and gas. I ate two handfuls of Jellie Bellie jelly beans sweetened with malitol during a movie one time and I couldn't find a bathroom quick enough. I was in the bathroom for over 2 hours, nonstop. No kidding. I was in severe distress from the malitol.

It has been my experience that you cannot subtract the sugar alcohols from the carbohydrate content from any product to get an ECC. Personally, the sugar alcohols affect me the same way as real sugar does....causing sugar level spikes in my system.

My two cents...

Ditto to April's post. I can't digest the SAs, same thing happens to me. It also stalls my weight loss in addition to all the cravings.

Thank you guys so much. I ate two candy bars laced with malitol and sugar alcohols on Monday and have had severe bloating and discomfort ever since. Today is Thursday and it seems to be subsiding a bit. I could not figure out why I was so bloated and craving sugar desparately.

I now know to stay away from products with these ingredients.

I am so thankful for this website.
