My local grocery has a new line of Hershey bars. They're small chocolate bars sweetened with erythritol and Splenda. So far I've seen three kinds: dark chocolate, chocolate with almonds, and chocolate with soy crisps ( a la Nestle's Crunch). They're good!

A 1-ounce bar cost me 99 cents. Numbers for the chocolate with soy crisps were 120 calories for a 1.1 ounce bar, total carbs 16g, fiber 6g, sugars < 1g, sugar alcohols 9g.

Now the question is: if vending machines and my local convenient store have lc candy, is that a blessing or a curse?

Ed:

You can find out more info about Hershey's sugar-free products here.

A direct quote from their site:

quote:
HERSHEY'S Sugar Free...products are not low-calorie foods. Excess consumption may have a laxative effect.

With that said, you may want to read this excellent article written by our webmistress, Andrea, about sugar alcohols.

It's usually a YMMV thing.

Have they switched to erythritol?

When I tried them (at the time they first came out) they were sweetened with lactitol. As with most sugar alcohols (other than erythritol) they gave me an unacceptable rise in my blood sugar. Besides, they didn't taste like hershey bars to me. 'Had a kind of funny taste.

Just my own experience.

Yeah, apparently they've switched to erythritol.

I tried the Hershey's dark chocolate and they were pretty good. I bought a bag and stuck it in the freezer (to keep my roommates out of it) and allowed myself 1 a day (1/3 of a serving). At that amount I didn't have any... er... discomfort, but I did binge and have a full serving one day and was not comfortable with the results, so to speak.

I'll definitely read the package CLOSELY before I buy Hershey's again. The lactitol and I did not like each other. In fact, I had such a bad reaction to it that I am a serious label reader for all products that contain sugar-alcohols.

Hey guys, just an update if you haven't figured it out yet...

There are two different products from Hershey's...

The "1 Carb" products that ARE made with Erythritol...
And the "Sugar-Free" products that ARE made with Lactitol...

The "1 Carb" bars are near the Atkin's and EAS low-carb bars (usually near the medicines and vitamins)....and the "Sugar-Free" products are near the regular candy.

Hershey's has NOT changed to Erythritol for their "Sugar-Free" line of products.

My walmart supercenter carries the 1 carb bar right by the checkout. I don't get the intestinal distress or the cravings from them that I get from some other LC chocolate. It helps that they are fairly small and I buy them one at a time and about once a month. In fact rather than give me cravings I find they hold off my hunger for a couple hours. Maggie is right though, they aren't real chocolatey but I like the taste.

I like them (so I try not to get too often). I think they taste like the Hershey Dark Chocolate, which has always been my personal favorite anyhow.
When I do, I try to just have one of the breakoff pieces throughout the day - so it takes me all day to eat the bar.

I stay away from junk food... lc.. or sugarfree... its still junk food. .. I'd rather eat something more filling, and longer lasting.... and non habit forming...

I have tried the 1-carb bars, I like chocolate w/soy chips, try and not eat maby of them don't want ot get in habit eating any type of candy again, since sugar is my biggest craving I would like to stay away from any "enticement" that might make me eat the "real thing". The dark chocolate was a bit bitter and dark choc. was my favorite. Also, the erythritol works on my tummy a bit more than other sugar alcohols I have eaten. I label the Reeses Sugar Free candy as a laxative. I tried them all when I started eating LC, until I figured it out. Still a lot of empty cals.

I learned my lesson about the low carb candy. I can't have it in the house, because I will eat it all. Eating more than 1 or 2 causes me great intestinal distress. So......I consider it a blessing that there are stores that sell them individually. That way I can have one and really savor it, once in a while, with no...er....problems.

Well, let me update my March post. I was referring to the "sugar free" Hershey's made with lactitol. They suck. On the other hand, the 1carbs with erythritol are very good. As MaryKay said, they do taste more like dark chocolate than milk chocolate. I like them pretty well and they don't do anything alarming to my blood sugar. (you can view my results here. )

I have to agree with the majority, the 1 carb bars are great, i have one about every 2 weeks, its about the only choc bar that i will eat after reading the article on the glycemic levels of different sugar alcohols. I commend hershey for being the first bar that i have seen using the erythritol. i purchase the individual also, food lion sells them for .89 a bar here.
