Hello all. Thought I would post a follow up to the "oatmeal" post I made about a week ago.

I added about 1/4 cup of real oatmeal for breakfast into my diet almost 2 weeks ago, and have lost an additional 5 lbs! I had stalled in the weight loss prior to adding this back and was staying at a constant weight for about 4 weeks.

I don't know how or why a little oatmeal has jumpstarted the loss again, but it might be worth a try for those of you who are close to your goal weight and crave whole oats. My only guess is that oatmeal is so filling that I'm not eating a midmorning snack, as it easily tides me over 'til lunch.

I've been eating McCann's Irish Oatmeal, which is not LC oatmeal. It's a box of real, rolled oats, which is much healthier than the quaker instant stuff. According to DANDR, 1/4 cup of real oatmeal has about 8-12g carbs.

Knowing the heart/cholesterol health benefits of whole oats, I decided to add them to the diet and have continued to lose.

I don't think we have that brand around here, but those carbs arent bad. I'd love to eat it if I could find it.

Not to tell anyone where to shop, but McCann's Irish Oatmeal is available at several stores online, also, including www.netgrocer.com. I haven't been eating it, but hearing these results, I may begin to have a little once in awhile. It is the *best* oatmeal I've ever tasted! I'm already imagining it with a little DaVinci syrup on it...mmmm!

My supermarket carries KETO Oatmeal. I eat Maggie's Cereal, which is very similar to the keto version.

McCann's Irish Oatmeal is usually available in the whole/health foods section of your supermarket.

I have often thought about in the future of my WOE adding in "Old fashion Rolled OATS" It is better for you than the instant oats. and saying the fact i have this huge container of it in my cubard and my kids wont eat it.. they will only eat the instant stuff.. (they say the rolled taste grose.. i think they are weird it gives a little more texture

Im not sure how far down the road i will have dream about oat meal agin ... but might try and have a very small amount maby once a month just to break a stall... shrug...

i am afraid to push things.. maby ill only eat it if i am going to the gym in the morning .. that way my body is quickly burning the carbs.

I found it right in the cereal section and I am going to give it a try. I have been on a way too many months stall.

What's the best way to cook and what ingredients do you add?

It would be really nice if there was a way to make like a breakfast bar or cookie thing.

Rob,

(liability clause) I'm not a doctor or nutritional expert, and cannot explain the continued weight loss I have experienced while eating oatmeal, so if you are going to try it, add it slowly into your diet and monitor carefully. But it is a nice little change of pace for me, and it's healthy, hearty and hasn't stopped my weight loss.

I buy a box of McCann's quick cooking oats, which will cook in about 5-10 minutes. They also make steel cut oats that need overnight soaking and contain more carbs, but the quick cooking taste just fine to me. And quick cooking does not mean "instant," like those little packets of Quaker oatmeal.

I boil about 1/2 cup of water with a pinch of salt, stir in 1/4 cup dry oats, reduce heat and let simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Then I add a little cinnamon, top with some strawberries, and that's it. It's delicious and incredibly filling for 1/4 cup worth of food. If you like it sweeter, make a dry mixture of cinnamon and Splenda and add that to the oatmeal.

Way back when, on another eating plan, I used to make oat groats - which are simply the whole oat kernel with the husk removed - and loved them! I used them as a breakfast food and also as a side dish, dressed up with herbs and green onion a la pilaf, it was so good.

I may have to check out the carb count on these again.

I used to pressure cook up a big batch and then just keep it in the fridge to reheat as needed.

For breakfast I ate it with vanilla soymilk and SF maple syrup - THAT would still work too! And some of that lovely cinnamon from Penzey's spices - I love that stuff.

Thanks for the idea, I may try it again sparingly and see what happens.

Good news and bad news!

Good news: Well I tried 1/4 cup this morning, followed the microwave directions then added some cinnamon and splenda. It tasted great and I feel full.

Bad news: I haven't lost anything yet. I don't think it is working!!!

Ha Ha. Just kidding. No bad news. Actually I was down a pound today, but my weight fluctuates. We will have to wait a week and see.

I think it is a great idea as I probably should be adding more carbs and just didn't want to add any bad carbs. Oatmeal is such a good food.

Ok, more good news bad news I guess.

The good news is that I haven’t gained weight. The bad news is that I am the same weight I was a week ago. However, I mention I do fluctuate and I was down another pound earlier in the week. But this was not a normal week as I had spent allot of time visiting in the hospital and did not drink as much water as I should have.

I will keep trying the oatmeal as it certainly does not seem to be hurting me.

Other observation:
Do not put in the microwave, set it for two minutes and then leave it unattended. It has a tendency to expand and overflow the bowl.

I, too, am nearing the end of my weight loss journey so I decided to add a little wheat germ & wheat bran to my flax cereal for some healthy carbs. That is the goal, to get us off the refined stuff so we can learn to like the healthy stuff, right?
